34th to 2nd at Martinsville.  Not bad for a days work.

Ernie seems to be having trouble qualifying well.  He has said in an interview
that he's having to re-learn the tracks a bit.  I'll put money on a good
qualiying run at Talladega.

Maybe he's bucking for another "Hard Charger" Award. I love to watch ol'
Swervin' Irvan split the pack on a run for the front. He absolutely (and
sometimes literally) drives the wheels off that Ford.

It's not the "Hard Charger" Award for improving the most positions. The Hard
Charger award is for running laps in the 1-5 positions. It's 5-4-3-2-1 points x
laps lead x track length (I think). The award for most positions improved in
each race is called something else. I don't have my press guide handy for the
exact name.

Oops...My mistake. You are right. The award is AP parts "meet the
challenge" ( or at least it was last year)and is awarded to the driver who
makes up the most positions from the start to the finish.

Hardly a mistake. You actually know the name of the award for advancing the most
positions, where I would have had to guess, and would have been wrong :-) The
big problem with Ernie winning that award (for the season) is that his
qualifying should continue to improve. I'm sure he would rather have that
alternative.
