Stevenage Boro 1-6 Arsenal
The World Cup may be over but it seems the Brazilians don't know how to stop
partying, as Arsenal's trio of Edu, Juan and Paulinho all hit the target in
a 6-1 victory.
Our first pre-season game, a testimonial for former Boro manager Paul
Fairclough, saw new signing Pascal Cygan pull on the red and white for the
first time but it was our attacking force which was on display.
Young left-back Juan, playing on the left of midfield for the first half,
opened the scoring with almost half an hour on the clock with a hard, low
drive from outside the area.
But 15 minutes later Stevenage equalised thanks to a scrambled goal from a
corner. Any number of players got a touch to it, but the final touch
belonged to Robin Trott.
Half time saw Arsenal make substitutions en masse, and a number of younger
players got their chance. But the goal deluge began with the experienced
Edu, who - with probably his last touch before being substituted - fired in
an awesome long-range shot.
11 minutes later it was the English's turn, with Liam Chilvers chipping the
Boro 'keeper and Jermaine Brown heading in a corner, before the Brazilians
took over again when Paulinho fired a shot which the 'keeper could only get
a finger to.
The scoreline was completed with 83 minutes on the clock when Irishman
Graham Barrett lobbed a shot over the despairing 'keeper.
