Check out this quote from Clash coach Calloway regarding his displeasure
with Eric Wynalda:

"Players are players. I hate to put it as bluntly as this, but they're my
tools."

The rest of the article is at:

http://www.sjmercury.com/sports/clash/cla620.htm

In the article, Calloway threatens to trade Wynalda if he doesn't perform.
Hey Laurie, how 'bout Rubencho for Waldo?

Putting aside our emotional attachment to players, don't you think it might
actually be somewhat healthy for a coach to view his players this way?  By
doing so, he is free to make personnel decisions based exclusively on talent
and contribution to the team without the baggage of emotion.

Not the warmest of relationships between the players and the coach, but
perhaps this is what he meant...

I have no probem at all with a coach calling it like he sees it without
worrying about the player's pedigree or popularity.  Look at the mess that
Rubencho has made because the MetroStars are afraid of benching their only
Hispanic "star."  However, the attitude of Calloway and other coachs that
soccer is a coach's game where the coachs are the chessmasters and the
players are merely the pieces, makes me sick.  Unless he is Pete Carril, a
coach should have more respect for players and their creative abilities.
Nobody is paying to see Calloway and his "tools."

I don't find this too surprising, and I don't imagine that Calloway or
Bridgwater should either.  It's one of those things that I've been expecting
all along:  Waldo failing his club side.  He consistenly performs well for
the national team, but it should be pretty clear by now that he's
inconsistent as hell for his club teams.

I was kinda hoping that the problem was one with being away from the states,
but it's beginning to look like it wasn't.

If he does get traded, I pity the team that picks him up.

These guys had a very short honeymoon when Waldo played for the SFB
Blackhawks before going to Germany.

I predict a similarly short honeymoon on their second marriage too.

As far as the answer to Alex's trenchant question in the header, shouldn't
the conjunction be "and" and not "or"?

I tend to bet the fans would rather trade the coach.  On the MLS-SanJose
mailing list, we regularly bash our coach with reckless abandon.  We also do
some Waldo-bashing because of his sometimes lack of performance, but I think
most on the list would agree that Waldo would perform better if we had a
coach that he respected.  Look at his performance with the Nat'l team.
Waldo respects Sampson and performs much better in that arena than here in
San Jose.  Look at his celebration after his goal vs. Mexico.  The guy ran
half the field to give Sampson a hug.  You won't see Eric doing that with
Laurie.  IMO, Laurie doesn't have the respect of the team and this is going
a long way toward the inconsistencies we in San Jose are seeing with the
Clash's performance.  One game they will look solid and unbeatable.  The
next game they will look weak and in dire need of resusitation.  Out with
Laurie, in with Cruyff! (or at least in with Krazy George, our
cheerleader-for-hire).

Cheers,

Darrin

Eric Spurlock on the Revolution list is running a poll in which list
members are asked to guess what position the Rev will be in after the
month of July after a 7 away matches out of 8 stretch, as well as which
teams won't make the playoffs in each conference, lastly, which coach will
be the next one to get the ax (or be forced to walk the plank, a la
Firmani).

Why don't we run the latter poll here?

I wasn't aware of the Calloway-bashing on MLSSJ, but I don't read the
list. I suspect that few NASers are aware of the criticism of Stapleton in
New England (some warrented, some not). I suspect that there is criticism
of Arena in DC, Houghton in Colorado, and quite likely Newman in KC.

Any guesses on which will be the 2nd coach to go (after Firmani)?

Cheers, Chris

Interesting trade ... but I'm still not totally ready to drop Wynalda.

Samspon vs. Calloway ... I'm more familiar with Calloway's acomplishments than
with Sampsons. Has Sampson ever played soccer?

I think it can be easy to not like your coach... after all, he's always demanding
performance from you.

Sampson is only Wynalda's coach on a less frequent basis and with a more
motivated and better set of players (assuming the USA is better than the Clash)
so there has to be less tension there. If Sampson was Waldo's league coach, I
don't think that there would be that much hugging going around.

Has anyone stopped to think that all this might just be for publicity? I know
that there's some history of tension between Calloway and Wynalda...

I think we are somewhat lucky to have Calloway as a coach- he isn't totally
stupid, he isn't a clown. Sure, there are better coaches, but not too many.

The stupidity of Calloway's comments are rivalled only by those of the
San Jose General Manager, Bridgewater, who once bellowed at the fans
"Do you know who I am??? I brought soccer to the US!!!"  San Jose
does not deserve these jokers.
