How many times have the world's best team won the world cup?

Post by tim » Sat, 22 Jun 2002 22:35:17

The winner of any world cup is always lauded as the 'world champions' but
how often has the team that is at the time acknowledged as the world's best
won the world cup? Surely being 'world champions' is not always the same as
being the world's best team.
If this is a dumb question then i apologise.I am self admittedly not overly
knowledgeable about football.

You surely are right, the best way to determine the best team is a
league, not a cup.
But missing the proofs, we may only go with opinions.
There are usually more teams that claim to be the best, so, it0's may
be easier to wonder "when a team that won is not considered one of the
best of that WC?"
Honestly I wouldn't know what team to pick.

Most people will concur that the Dutch team of the 70's were undoubtedly the
greatest team of that time even though they failed to win the WC, getting beaten
in the final twice.
The French team of the early to mid 80's was superb also, though they never made
it past the WC semi-finals.
Brazil in 1982 was a fantastic Brazilian team, one of the best Brazilian teams
ever, yet they didn't make it past the 2nd round/QFs.

Oh, and the great Hungarian team of the 50's were defintely considered to be
head and shoulders above the rest, they lost the 1954 final to Germany under
controversial circumstances.

What people tend to forget about that Brazilian team of 1982
was that their main striker was also very poor - Serginho.
I never understood how he made it into that team.

It's kind of difficult to know, really, because all the teams don't play each
other except at the World Cup.  Sure, there is the European Championship, or
the Copa America, etc. but there's no way to know how those teams fare against
each other.  Most other games are basically scrimmages.  Injuries play a big
part.  In a sense, the WC defines who is acknowledged as the world's best
team, unless a team gets upset by another team that has a singular awesome
performance (and I haven't seen that happen yet.)

Yes, it was an awesome match, worthy of a good final.

West Germany was pretty ***ing good though. AT WORST, the second best team in
the world.

Holland were the best, though not as good as 1974 (no Cruyff).

The Italians were excellent, though.

Brazil was IMO easily better than anyone except possibly Argentina, pre-Maradona
bust.  Their defense and midfield were virtually impenetrable.  Holland weren't
nearly as talented as '90 or '98 and really only played well against Brazil.
Italy was Baggio and 10 passengers.

Yeas, and they confirmed it 2 years later in HOLLAND against Italy.

There is only one final and in 98 was Brasil france.

I got to watch that one in a sports bar with about 20
Brazilian fans in yellow, about 12 Holland fans in
orange, and an assorted crowd of locals (near San
Jose, CA).  Incredible energy.  I was rooting for
Holland to get their chance.  Oh well...

Quote:

Best is a matter of timing, and at the time not many dispute the winners are
the best, however favorites are another thing altogether...

Quote:

Germany was hailed as the favorite, as was Italy.

Quote:
> Brazil 62 I believe were the best

Yes, favored and won it.

Quote:
> England 66 were the best whatever some people may tell you

Germany and Brazil were favored.

Quote:
> Brazil 70 were the best

and favored.

Quote:
> Holland 74 may have been the best and not the winners Germany

Holland and Germany favored.

Quote:
> Holland 78 might have been the best and not Argentina who won, also
>Brazil  were good

Argentina favored.

Quote:
> Brazil 82 are often lauded as the best team of all not to win the cup,

Brazil favored, then Germany.

Quote:
> Argentina 86 were probably not as good as france or brazil, but they did

Argentina favored.

Quote:
> Germany 90 was the best team - Holland was also good

Italy and Germany favored. Italy the best team.

Quote:
> Brazil 94 hmmm, they might have been the best team, but Italy was strong,

Brazil and Germany favored.

Quote:

Brazil favored.

2002 - France, Argentina and Italy favored.

Therefore favorites rarely win...

Both Brazil and Germany will obviously be favored for the next cup

This may not answer the question fully, but it is interesting
