A look back--Holland-Argentina 1998

With nothing to do tonight I watched the last 35 minutes or so of one of
my all-time favorites.  A few comments.

  1.  This year's Dutch side is no where near the equal of that one, with
Kluivert, Bergkamp, Davids, Stam, the De Boers, and Overmars.  I had
forgotten how completely they dominated the second half of that game,
keeping the ball in Argentina's end for many minutes.

   2.  Argentina had at least as much individual brilliance as this year's
squad, but seemed to have a little less teamwork.  I had forgotten that
Veron was ever young, beautiful, and fast.  He must have gained 10-15 lbs.
at United, where he was invariably static. Batistuta, however, was a lot
better than Crespo.

   3.  I sure miss Cantor and Longo.  They were actually quite laconic by
today's standards, which made things even more dramatic.

   4.  And, of course, probably the most dramatic goal I have ever seen by
Bergkamp.

With the exception of Kluivert, I'd agree with you. If that team
had had an RvN, they could well have gone on to win it. They had
opening after opening against Brazil, but Kluivert was useless.

I was rooting for Holland, like most.
That Ortega send off and Bergkamp
clincher was very soothing. The Argies
were diving quite a bit. In all fairness though,
they were spent after their previous match
against England and it was showing. Absent that,
Holland would've had a much harder match.

I've yet to see a Holland team as good as
the '74 one, and I doubt if I ever will.

A propos to nothing, I'd just like to mention that (benefitting from
20/20 of course), I think it was criminal to have Holland-Argentina
play on the last day of their group phase.

They should've made it the first or second, and then we'd have seen
sparks fly.

Hehe. For the record, that commentator is a radiocommentator, not tv.
That clip is dubbed.

Cheers!

Many thanks. That clip is wonderful.  And it conveys that moment so
well--we all sat there thinking, holy shit, did I really just see that? Am I
really lucky enough to be alive right now?

The replay of Ortega's fatal dive is another highlight. After he appears
to have an epileptic seizure, you see that the defender didn't even touch
him.
