When it comes to awards, Beckenbauer's choices seem based on
the first four letters of the footballer's name.

Let's be serious..Beckham is is not even remotely qualified for the
best world footballer title. Even mentioning him in the same breath the
likes of Zidane, Rivaldo or Figo is nothing short of sheer blasphemy.

He can curl a cross all right, but this is only useful if the other
side chooses, for some reason, to also play English soccer.

He can take a free kick, but then again, there are a hundreds of them
players out there equally able to do the same, some of them playing in
Macedonia.

He never amounted to anything in the WC/EC and his grace under pressure
has been conspicuously absent.

Mt guess: he won't get it, regardless of the Kaiser's endor***t.

Not at all - his peers and most European managers would die to have him in his side.

He can also score and dribble and play-make too and pop in the odd free-kick and has
captained England.....

Tell that to the Portuguese who fell to 2 Beck ham crosses.

But Macedonians don't have to do it on the big stage which makes his free-kicks more
impressive. Surely you have some understanding of football...

He was fine in the WC and our best player in a bad team in Euro2000. Are you sure you
are not just being bigoted again Orphan Annie?

So what? Same folks would die to have Jaap Stam at their side. Does
this imply that Stam is qualified for the award? Or, that he is as good
as Rivaldo?

Whether he captained England or not is irrelevant. As for dribbling and
play-making, he shines against the likes of Steve Elliot and Jody
Craddock; he did not "shine" in any way at the WC/EC, against more
adept opposition.

I am not arguing that Beckham is a bad player; (or that your team was
not bad at the EC). Instead, I am simply saying that he does not
compare to Zidane, Figo or Rivaldo.

No arguments left, eh?

Let's not widen it Orphan Annie - you say it is blasphemy but Beckham is a proven
winner at all levels and I think it's a moot point whether he is with the 3 mentioned
above but IMO he is. Some would say that Zidane shouldn't be there anyway but....

So he never contributed to the wins against Juve, Bayern, Barca, etc...?

He never made an assist or cross or scored in Europe? Get real and don't be silly.

Like I said, he was our best player if I remember correctly and which 'adept'
opposition are you talking about? Two assists v. Portugal and I can't quite remember
the Argentinan game. That's the only two 'adept' teams in the finals we played.

The rest were mediocre.

He's not quite as versatile as the above it's true but what he does specialise in, he
does better.

Beckham is simply the best crosser of the ball alive. Figo is very good also and
Rivaldo not bad but not as good. And managers of all nations appreciate outstanding
crossing.

Calling you a troll is simply a statement of fact: it isn't an argument.

He's said this about Beckham in the past. Obviously German's appreciate
crossing.

Hey, this is a discussion group and I am entitled to my opinion,
whether I know best or not. Compared to Figo and Rivaldo, Beckham is
a primitive player.
