There are so many names I could put in here, but you have really
missed one (and not the only one of course) of the best:

Michel Platini

If I make a list of the thirty best midfielders ever I have my doubts I
would include any one of the above names. Let's see (in no particular
order).

Franz Beckenbauer
Cruiff
Maradona
Pele'
Di Stefano
Puskas
Platini
Zico
Vava'
Gerson
Euzebio
Bob Charlton
Di Stefano
Adhemir da Ghia
Didi
Meazza
Piola
Zizinho
Breitner
Mazzola
Facchetti
Teofilo Cubillas
Pepe Schiaffino
Jose Manuel Moreno
Matth?us (Ok, you have one, not on the top 20 though)
K.-H. Rummenigge
Neeskens
Rivelino
Ardiles
Kempes
Ruud Gullit

And many others I surely have forgot ....

BTW, I think Sammer can make this list one day, BUT he is not in it
yet.

This list has a very broad concept of midfielder. Certainly many of
those would also make a list with the best forwards ever. Some would
make a list with the best defenders.

It have to be Glen Hoddle.

Well, I'm from Germany and I can't believe that you put Lothar on that
list. He's by no means comparable to Robson and Hoddle. If I had to
pick five, none of the above would be on the list, though Mr. Robson
stands out for me. Sammer plays best as a sweeper, both in the
national squad and for Dortmund.

My picks would be:

Bobby Charlton, Zico, Bernd Schuster, Maradona, Falcao

Oh please! The universally-recognized top 2 players of all time were
midfielders --- Pele and Maradona. You know this, don't you? So what are
you talking about?

Technically you are correct -- Pele and Maradona wore #10 and that
is a midfield position. However both players were so special that
sometimes their play elevated them above being called just midfielders.
In some ways, the jersey number 10 was considered a position of its
own during the height of Pele's talent and to some extent when Maradona
was at his best.

But even if one doesn't include Pele and Maradona amongst midfielders,
only Mattaheus deserves some considersation, and he is not the player
that Michel Platini was (another #10 by the way!).

Erick?.....are you totally ignorant about the game called
football?????

Both of your suggestions were out and out strikers, not midfielders!

Add to the list Johnny Haynes and Pat Crerend

Argentina's squad played the 4-4-2 system back in 1986, arguably the
best year of Maradona. The strikers on that team were Burruchaga and
Valdano. Maradona played midfield. Pele was a striker in 1958 when the
Brazilians played a 4-3-3 system. The out and out strikers of their
team were Garrincha, Pele  and Vava. However in 1966 and 1970 Pele
played midfield, as he has most often in his original team FC Santos.

I'm afraid *you* are showing an astonishing ignorance, Red Devil. Either
that or you are 15 years old or so. :-) Maradona and Pele were both
classic creative midfielders. They both played in the middle, from which
they'd often run up themselves or set up goals. They also both wore the
classic (midfielder's) #10 shirt. Read Riffster's recent reply to this
thread (much more knowledgeable and sophisticated than yours). He admits
Maradona and Pele were technically midfielders, but thinks that they went
up front and scored goals too often to be your average midfielders.
Perhaps they played an in-between position, sort of like the
"mezzapuntas" of our day (del Piero, Ortega, Juninho, Rui Costa,
etc.). But then again, the mezzapuntas are considered midfielders!

That's a joke! You forgot Pele, Rivelino, Zico and Falcao (brazil).
Maradona, Ardiles and Di Stefano (argentina).
