Why do they insist on calling football 'soccer'

Post by John » Fri, 24 Jan 2003 04:50:18

Is it not about time we put our foot down on these nancy boys shouting
'soccer' all the time. I heard that new Everton striker (American guy
that scored twice at wkd)talking about his new 'soccer' club WAKE UP
dafty if you've been told once, you've been told a million times.
FOOTBALL. not with an oval ball and shoulder pads. No thats for rugby
players scared of getting hurt. Its FOOTBALL.

"You say tomAto, I say tomato."  I'd prefer it the way you want it, but
unfortunately, we live in a land that considers "Football" the "American"
kind.  So, here we have to call it soccer to diferentiate it.  That carries
over to when we go overseas.  Besides, why worry about what McBride calls
it. He scored three goals in 2 matches (not games).  Ain't that really all
that matters?

see you!

I must say that I was beginning to worry that the forces of the universe
were even more***ed up than they is apparent.  This puts things right
to some extent, though I still worry that the periodicity has run amok.
Hopefully, this will get things back on sh-edule.

Sincerely, I already told that, to me the term "soccer" is bothering and
ever remaind me of mice; it is similar to sorce, Italian for mouse, from the
late Latin sorcer; worst, I connect that with zoccola, Napolitan for mouse
and extended to very vulgar ***s.

It is a matter of sounds.

Free to have different opinion, obviously..

techincally, soccer is a brittish term! "Soccer" was what the cool kids used to
use as slang for football".. They didn't want.. The leter A was dropped from
the slang word "soccer" so it wouldnt sound like ass-occer ;)

So when someone tells you " its football, not soccer!" Remind then where the
term "soccer" came from... the same land that invented the game

Cheers,
Tony

Soccer
Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football
Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives
of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules
of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a
rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the
Association several months later. The name Association Football was
coined to distinguish it from Rugby.

By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer
had made its appearance by 1895.

By the way, what did everyone think about the refereeing in the World
Cup?

"1859 Geelong Football Club formed"  that's an AFL/Australian rules
football club btw.   Not just because it was first but it's always been
a bigger sport here.. unfortunately.

Would be confusing to refer to them both as football.
Of course Americans have no excuse, as with not going metric! :)
