FIFA rankings - gotta love em (can't shoot em)

Well, I know what you're expected here - another rant about how
Australia slipped in the rankings, plummetting off the end of the Earth.

But no, something different this time.

Rather than just crush the spirit of a nation by lowering their ranking
a further 3 places to 89th - FIFA thought "No, that's not a large enough
number".

So, Australia actually appears FOUR TIMES in the ranking (admittedly, it
is 89th each time).  So, presumably Australia is now regarded as the
356th best nation in the world.

Obviously FIFA people wanted to stress the point that you are really in 89th
place and that may be, whatever you do, whoever you beat, you'll be there
for a long time.

Not likely to increase ranking after seeing the team named for the series
against Turkey. No Moore (injured), Viduka or Kewell. Glad I didn't buy
tickets, once again we get poor entertainment at high prices.

You're soooo pessimistic. That's not at all the way to look at it. Australia
1 has 486 points, and so do Australia 2, 3, and 4. That means that
Australia's total points are 1944. Brazil, which in FIFA's flawed ranking is
first, has 838 points. This means that the Socceroos are *by far* the best
team on the planet. If you don't win your next WCQ match by at least a 29
goal margin, I'll be really disappointed.

Hey, as a Scot I resent that. We're nowhere near as good as mediocre
right now. (or as good as Australia for that matter)

Some FIFA rankings are just plain weird, though. Canada is only 3 places
behind the Aussies, and that just doesn't make sense. A full Australian
squad is much closer in quality to teams like the USA, Belgium, Ireland
etc than to Canada.

I doubt that Australia will win their next WCQ match by 29 goals (at
least I *hope* not). If they play the same team that is facing Turkey
(ie no Kewell no Viduka), they might be lucky to win.
