US Soccer Fans opinions on US v Mexico

: I would like to hear your opinions on the US game versus Mexico in
: November. Do you think we have a chance. So far al the team have been
: killed that have been over there( Canada , Jamaica ect. ) . Plus does
: anyone know the last time they lost there? or even tied?

i personally don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell, but i have
heard some others who think we might be able to pull out a win, if enough
things happen right.

i think our strategy ought to be:***strategy, let's just go play
super-attacking soccer and hope for the best.  we might get killed, but
we'd get killed if we played defensively anyway, so why not?

Depending on the outcome of the other US games, the Mexico game may not
be of very big importance. On the other hand, Mexico is under pressure
TO WIN AT HOME. If we have the right lineup, Mexico may be in for a big
surprise. My prediction Mexico 0 - US 1.

According to Mark Wheeler's comprehensive US Soccer page, the last,
and only, US non-loss in Mexico was a 1972 Olympic qualifier which
ended 1-1.

The last US match in Mexico was in the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup final
(continental championship) in the Azteca Stadium, which ended
Mexico 4-0 USA. Prior to that, the previous match was in Oct.
1984, which ended Mexico 2-1 USA. The US has never won In Mexico
but has done well recently against the Mexicans elsewhere,
including the 1995 US Cup in Washington, DC (USA 4-0 Mexico),
the last tfriendly before WC94 in Pasadena (USA 1-0 Mexico)
and the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup final also in the Rose Bowl
(I believe, USA 3-0 Mexico). The US also beat Mexico on
penalties in the 1995 Copa America quarterfinals down in
Uruguay (but loss to them in the 1997 US Cup).

It looks as though the match may not have any bearing on US'
qualification.  They should have their tickets punched for France by
then.  As a result, Sampson will decide not to field the strongest
available team. Also, Keller will not be released by Leicester for a
game that doesn't mean anything. US would be very lucky to get a draw.

US Soccer Fans opinions on US v Mexico

Post by Howard H. Hamilt » Thu, 11 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I don't think we will win (Mexico hasn't lost a home World
Cup qualifier in a very long time) but the loss won't
hurt us very much.  As Tab Ramos said in an early interview,
CONCACAF qualification is determined by beating the weaker
teams, and matches between Mexico and the US won't matter
in the long run.

If the USA beats Jamaica in October, they will most likely need
only a point in their final three matches to qualify.  After
Mexico, we have Canada away and El Salvador at home.  I'm
pretty confident that we'll get a point from the final two.

So what are our chances?  I think this match will be played
more for pride than anything else.  If the USA gets a draw,
that would be great; but a loss isn't the end of the world.

Cheers, Howard

Not much of one.  Mexico just doesn't get less than 3 points at home,
these days.

A draw is possible, but even that would be a surprise.

We've got a good shot at 6 more points in the WCQ, however, and an
outside shot at 9.  A US win at home in any of the El Salvador or
Jamaca or Canada <even away> games would hardly be surprising.  The
hard part would be to string them together, especially as the El
Salvador game probably won't be needed by us, but may be *vital* to
them.

Just my 3 cents (inflation).

Hahahahaha! I really love your passion. OK, you have a valid point. But
the fact is, US won from Mexico in Mexico a few years ago for some
Olympic qualifiers. Actually, someone mentioned it on this newsgroup,
too bad I don't remember who and when. This is soccer, shit happens. It
will happen, much sooner then you or I can ever expect it.

Hopefully this WILL be the case

I seriously doubt this would happen, and will be VERY disappointed if it
does. The goals of the US team are 1) qualify for France, and 2) Do better
than they did in 94.

For that to happen we need the starters to be able to play together under
pressure away from home, against quality teams where the outcome is of
some importance, either points or pride.

While the game will hopefully mean zero to both teams as far as
qualifying, US-Mexico have developed a good rivalry. The Mexican fans
would want Bora's head if they were to lose to the US in Azteca, and a win
in Mexico or even a draw would be a feather in Sampsons cap.

So I fully expect both teams to field their best teams, with the possible
substitution of Freidel for Keller, to appease Leicester City's manager.

The USA may draw provided Keller does not make any more stupid mistakes,
and all of the first-choice players are fit..
The probable result, however, is a loss.

I envy you.  Being so far removed from rational thought or any sense of
reality must be wonderfully liberating.  Sort of an
Eastern/existentialist/pure beingness thing--completely removed from the
intellect, only much funnier for those watching.

I agree with this assessment.  Keller has become a good enough keeper
that if he is on, Mexico might control 75-80% of the play, and yet
Keller still might preserve the draw.
