Why football is called soccer & American football football

Post by Shing Hon Johnny Wo » Sun, 30 Oct 1994 04:17:57

I have a question in mind for a long time...
Why do people called football, soccer?   In my mother country, everyone
called football football but after I have immigrated to Canada, I found
that most people called football, soccer.
And why do people called American football, football, even they use
their hand to grasp the ball most of the time.

Hmmmm.  What I can understand is why some people call soccer football.
And Football American football, because it's perfectly clear that Football
is football and soccer is soccer. And why do they call Volleyball Volleyball
seems to me it should be hand ball, they use their hands don't they?

Go figure:-?.

Because that's the way we are, and dammit, we like it that way.  So
there!  Also, the game of American Football is much more popular than
soccer, and legend has it that it started when someone picked up a ball
during a soccer game in 1869 or some year that happened long before
people asked pondering questions on the internet.  In America, we are
proud that we do things a little differently from the rest of the world.
We have gallons, miles, fahrenheit, and acres.  We have these roadsigns
that don't conform to international standards.  Why make some blue sign
with a red slash when you can write "No Parking"?  Why spell color or
humor with a "u"?  If we give in on these things, the next thing you
know, the United States will be ruled by a world government that will
take away all our freedoms...  :)

You stupid, ignorant Yank.

You've got gallons, miles, fahrenheit, and acres as a legacy from the
British Empire.

American football is simply a variation on Rugby football, which was
invented when Webb-Ellis picked up a soccer ball and ran with it in
England.

Get yer facts right next time.

For the same reason they call it the "World Series" of baseball when
only North American teams play the silly thing.

And even they stopped to play it during the last season....

It was great going to a bar the evening and not have been bothered by
a baseball broadcasting. I hope the strike lasts foreever.   Ralf

FYI, It's called the World Series because a newspaper called the World
sponsored it in the beginning.

Perhaps this has already been answered, but here it is:  Original football
(which Americans now callsoccer) led to the origination of rugby, which
led to American football.  The new sport, American football, became known
as football, whil;e the old football became known as "association football,"
since it continued to be played by various clubs, or "associations."  So
the two were distinguished as fottball and association football. .. but
overtime, since "association football" was a long name, this became shorted
to "soccer" (as in the associaters," the "socciers," and then "soccers"),
and there you have it.

Why the new sport of American football took over the name of the
old sport, instead of developing its own new name, I do not know.

actually, we did think of our own name. We called it MxYzPtlk, but
attendance was poor because people were embarassed to try to say where
they were going on Sunday afternoons.... :-)  so we changed.  We admired
people like Phil so much, we copied.

Well Phil,  I know I am going to be just one of many a reply to this ignorant
post, but here's my two cents:

First to answer a serious question, American Football evolved from European football
but the legend goes that one day a disgruntled player picked up the ball and ran to the
goal and threw the ball in.  The idea caught on and the rest is history.  Or at least
that's what my junior high Phys Ed teacher taught me.

As for Phil's response, the only reasoning I can see is that right now a***y
American stud is giving it to his woman because she couldn't get the satisfaction
at home.  Now full of resentment he has to lash out at Americans any way he can.
Get over it Phil, I'm sure there are some British lasses there who don't care
about being pleasured in a physical relationship.  Maybe you thought it would
be fun to put down an entire country.  Just remember that Americans brought
you and your country onto the Internet, the next time you post an ignorant
opinion.

Phil, you watch your popular sport with...what's the guys name?  Pele? ;)
And we'll watch our sport with a lot of guys you've probably heard of.

And J Wong I hope you get your question answered correctly.

Eric

Oh dear...  I see the flame-war has started already.

This is what we get when yet another "newbie" joins in rec.sport.soccer
and asks the same, tired old question without bothering to consult the
frequently posted "Frequently Asked Questions" article.

Apologies to rec.sport.football.pro for the original cross-posting.

Well the whole point of play is to VOLLEY the ball isn't it?
By the way, HANDLING the ball (with fingers) is illegal in
VOLLEY-ball.
As for your yankee football, let's just say I find the name
inappropriate (only my opinion of course, Yank football is
Yank football, nothing will change that).
