Because that's the way we are, and dammit, we like it that way. So
there! Also, the game of American Football is much more popular than
soccer, and legend has it that it started when someone picked up a ball
during a soccer game in 1869 or some year that happened long before
people asked pondering questions on the internet. In America, we are
proud that we do things a little differently from the rest of the world.
We have gallons, miles, fahrenheit, and acres. We have these roadsigns
that don't conform to international standards. Why make some blue sign
with a red slash when you can write "No Parking"? Why spell color or
humor with a "u"? If we give in on these things, the next thing you
know, the United States will be ruled by a world government that will
take away all our freedoms... :)
