Soccer-Suker keen to join Dynamo Kiev
Jul 28, 1999

KIEV, July 28 (Reuters) - Croatian international striker Davor Suker wants
to join Dynamo Kiev, the club said on Wednesday.

``We're in a process of negotiation,'' Dynamo president Hrigory Surkis
said, adding that it was Suker who intiated the talks with the Ukrainian
champions.

``...Suker called Dynamo coach Valery Lobanovsky and offered his
services,'' said Surkis.

``However, the fact that we have talks (with Suker) doesn't necessarily
mean that he will play for us. In any case, our coach will have the final
say.''

Suker, who won the Golden Boot award at the 1998 World Cup finals with six
goals, was released by Real Madrid in May after falling out with coach John
Toshack.

He had been suspended by the club without pay two weeks earlier following
his criticism of Toshack.

Ukrainian media said they expected Suker to travel to Kiev next week.

Dynamo, European Cup semifinalists last season, were beginning this
season's European campaign on Wednesday with a home game against
Lithuania's Zalgiris Vilnius in the second qualifying round of the
Champions League.

I would say that his move to Kiev is extremely unlikely. Though Dynamo can
definitely afford his services, it would be against all their menagement
principles. They make a good part of their revenues in transfer fees, and
they wouldn't pay any player more than they may count on getting for him
on a transfer market. Besides, with acquiring Shatskikh they filled the
starting forward spot on the roster previously occupied by Shevchenko.
In addition, there is a serious doubt that aging Suker could handle the
almost ***ic training and conditioning regimen Lobanovski is so fond
of. I guess his Kiev call was just Suker's play to generate more interest,
in an attempt to get a better deal out of Rayo.

It would be cool if Keller's new club had a real offense to see that the
other guys' goalie gets some pressure.

In the past few months, I've heard rumours linking Suker with Dynamo, Rayo
Vellecano, Croatia Zagreb, Perugia, about half a dozen English clubs, and
even New Jersey in the MLS.  He seems to be testing the waters for the
best deal he can get.

Ha, ha, don't worry, don't worry (be happy). Just shrill attempt. Yesterday
he signed for New York Metrostars. New York is 7500 kilometres away from
Kiev and 5760 from Madrid. Typical end for perished star. His company will
be Valderrama and other condoned clowns.

?uker was good, high class player, but now he must pay high price for his
disdain. For such undisciplined player there's no place in any serious club,
especially in high disciplined team as Dynamo Kiev is. After winning Golden
Boot on World Cup 98 he think he's the best player in the world. How
somebody can be such bloated?

No sign of disdain, no sign of undiscipline I saw in D. Suker while playing
for my team (Real Madrid). Simply things didn't run well last two years and
now he is....you know... too old. That's all. It will happen even to these
people you see playing football in the kindergarten.

I heard tonight on Croatian TV that ?uker signed for Metostars but now I
heard he signed for Arsenal! Anelka to Real, ?uker to Arsenal. So, I'm
removing my first paragraph, but not and second.

I don't know if it's correct, but I just heard that he signed for
Arsenal today (as they got to get rid of that Anelka-money).
Maybe some of our English friends can confirm that.

note followups.

why is freaking EVERYBODY rumored to be signing for MetroStars! lately?

the matthaeus rumor refuses to die, every brazilian player this side of
ronaldo have been rumored to be going there, and now suker?

people, wake up.  MLS clubs have a salary cap of less than $2 million PER
TEAM.  granted, nobody believes that the Metro players are really getting
less than $2M collectively (especially the way that the Metro is beholden
to that Ramos creep), but there are still financial limitations for all
MLS clubs that you don't have in Europe.

besides, the Metro absolutely sucks.  they have, what, nine points on 19
games and fewer goals than anyone in the league?  even in the bastardized
MLS, that's still awful.

I heard him yesterday night in an interview on a Spanish radio confirming
that he had signed for Arsenal (one plus one years). He said that his deal
has nothing to do with Anelka's one. He started his negotiations ten days
ago, when Anelka was about to go to Lazio.
