Dear Roberto,

This discussion has been held already (very boring and stupid comments).
Don't forget this is a USA newsgroup (but I might be mistaken). Let those
Americans have football. To me soccer sounds nicer. At least everybody
knows what we're talking about.

let's get this straight. I agree. Football is football. American football
is the other game, and completely ***it is.

Actually, Oliver Stone is about to come out with a movie that shows how
rec.sport.soccer is simply a nefarious *** by the American
military-industrial complex to enslave the world by compelling them to read 5
posts a week from newbies about how the game is called "football" and not
"soccer."

: it to a some short of shot-them-up sport.

This question is only asked ~100 times per year, so since we all
should make turns let me answer it this time around.

1 - on this newsgroup you can use any name you like. Since most
posts here are in English, people tend to use the words 'football'
and 'soccer'. The choice is yours. Americans use 'soccer', the
rest of the world 'football' (when speaking English).

2 - The name of the newsgroup is rec.sport.soccer simply because
the name rec.sport.football was already taken. Guess by who. An
alternative would have been to have rec.sport.football.soccer and
rec.sport.football.american, but that would have implied that the
two sports are somehow related and that would have people like you
(and me) screaming again.

So stop worrying about the name; use whatever uou like, and try
to enjoy the newsgroup and the sport.

I make it a point to call it 'futbol' so as to not be confused with what most
others here call 'football'

Soccer isn't actually an American term but an English one use so that in the
dim and distant past Association Football wasn't confused with Rugby Football,
also anything that diassociates soccer from that american rubbish gets my vote
any day.

How about this

REC.SPORT.FOOTBALL.REAL for our news group and

REC.SPORT.FOOTBALL.SHAM for the gridiron newsgroup. This should

keep both the sides happy.

Also, you ignorant twit, soccer IS an "English" -not American-
name for the sport, coming from a condensed form of "association
football".  If you are so into authenticity then demand that the
sport be called association football in every context, as every
other name is shortened.

A simple & crude response to the question raised here is this: until the
nations of the world who associate football, futbol, fussball, etc. with
soccer have enough participation on the 'Net to overule the current
overwhelming American majority, they are mearly pissing in the ***-wind.

Even though football is a better name for soccer than football is
for [american] football, it is still considered football on the internet.

Here's why......
The Internet started out as ARPANET, designed by/for American Military.
Once scientists saw the potential, they wanted in and soon the Internet
was formed, and ARPANET was a whole other net....... so as you can see,
the Internet is an American founded network, so American terms are
used........ but, on other nets [yes, there are other nets than the
Internet] there are subs called "Football"....

probably cos the americans call there glorified rugby pages football so
we who watch a decent sport have had to change names to avoid readind so

Agreed, that both words came out England, one being official and
the other being a nickname. But Why the hell did US not use the
official name i.e., "ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL" or "FOOTBALL" to describe
the game?? It's like renaming NewYork as Big Apple.

They could have found someother appropriate name for the parody
that is gridiron.

USSF should really be USAFF or USFF. Let nicknames be nicknames
