ITALY WON UNDER21 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Post by Cesa » Fri, 22 Apr 1994 23:19:03

Last afternoon in Montpellier(FRA) Italy won the final of the
Under-21 European Championship, beating Portugal by 1-0 at the
first extra time.
Italian national team won, despite of the unsportive atmoshpere
around the match, after that in the semifinals they beated
France at the penalty kicks. French mass-media and fans were
against our team. Their trainer even called our way to play
"old and surpassed in the last 20 years", all that we can say
is that maybe ours isn't a very enjoyable way to play soccer,
but it's nothing like "old and surpassed" since our Under-21
won the last 2 editions of the European Cup and that our clubs
reached and most of the times won the 3 main European Cups for
clubs.

Not to mention holding the European cup for 6 years in the trot by
3 different clubs. It is only due to the 5 year absence of English
clubs from European competition that the Italians had managed to catch
up.

Who can claim the English sides would have done better in the late eighties than
they have in the nineties? During the nineties, England has the one cupwinner's
cup victory, while Italy has averaged about two European cups a year. While
Liverpool in the late eighties was better than Man. United is now, I think your
comment is unfounded.

They are just Losers... Why can't they admit that this time we were
better???

The only country who can have a go at us Internationally is England
as they have the edge at Senior International Level over us (the Azzurri)
We have a better win/loss record against all other countries...
As for the rest all their talk is just jealousy. Don't worry Cesare,
at least we can say that our country won three World Cups .....

Actually, I believe English teams are still well ahead in terms of European
trophies won, despite not entering for the first 8 years and the 5 year Heysel
ban. Also, England has the most number of teams that have won European trophies
indicating more strength in depth than any other European league. Teams I
can think of who have won trophies:
Manchester United     Newcastle United
Chelsea               Tottenham Hotspur
West Ham United       Arsenal
Manchester City       Nottingham Forest
Liverpool             Aston Villa
Everton

Also Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wonderers have reached the final and lost.

I admit that Italy are currently far and away the most successful club nation
but it will still take them years to catch England up. As for Spain, I would
rank them nowhere without Barcelona.
So where does that leave your argument now, sucker?

Huw

You also forgot that Ipswich Town won the UEFA cup in the early 80's
I think it was 1981.

Actually it is still true, I seem to remember reading an article in
a magazine in 1990 when English clubs had been allowed back into
Europe and it said then that English clubs were still way ahead
of Italian clubs in terms of success in European club competitions.

Well, I think u've been sleeping for a long time, English clubs have been
accepted again in European competitions, and that's been 4 years ago
in the meanwhile italian clubs kept winning, and WHERE WERE ENGLISH CLUBS
LAST YEAR WHEN WE WON 2 OF THE 3 CUPS AND LOST THE THIRD FINAL????????
AND THE YEAR BEFORE?

I think the 5 years long banning really damaged English clubs, both
economically and regarding their way of playing, you have to admit it.

Anyway I didn't mean to write a nationalist article, I just wanted to blame
French media and soccer fans for their unsportive behaviour. Nothing more.
If u got ticked and felt your national pride offended, well , that wasn't
my aim!

Greetings, Cesare.

To end this discussion (one hopes), let's have some facts.  Here are all
European finals since 1955, and as you will see, Huw is essentially right:
England are still leading in European trophies won (though Italy would only
be one behind if they win all three this year).  Not counting Fairs Cups,
England would only be one ahead.

I welcome any comments on mistakes in the list below.

That *was* so, *NOW* it is no longer.
Don't try to make up any excuses, as someone famous once said:

ITALY WON UNDER21 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Well, no. England doesn't have anymore a better record than Italy in
head-to-head games. We finally reached them in 1990.

When I started following soccer (in the seventies) the score was 0-4-4
(Italy wins, draws, England wins). Then we started to make up.
In 1973 (I think) we won twice, in Torino (2-0) and Wembley (1-0).
Then we lost in 1976, in a tournament in the US (3-2, after leading
2-0!!). Then we met twice during the qualification round to WC 78, both
teams winning at home 2-0. The England victory (actually a good result
for Italy) was the last time, as far as I know, that we lost to them.
We won in 1980 (1-0), in Torino again, during the EC; we won in Mexico
(I think) several years after, thanks to a penalty kick in the very last
minute. After a scoreless draw in Wembley (1989?), we won in Bari (WC 90)
and finally even the global score: 6-5-6.

However there are two other teams with better records than Italy in
head-to-head games. One of them doesn't exist anymore (USSR - won
four times, lost two and won all of the three official meetings).

I let the reader guess which is the other team, that not only has a
better record than us, but it won all the games and didn't allow us
any goal (hint: just one game in Middlesbourough -sp?- 1966).
