deducted 3 points by winning away from home. Is it a new rule laid down by
FIFA (just as silly as the red card business for a tackle from behind)

Jesus! Do you people in Hong Kong have a special medical condition wherby you
can only hear news about Man U? Do you not know that Spurs will have 6 points
deducted at the end of the season for financial irregularities?
Thus Spurs are effectively -3 points now.

Wrong. The points punishment was for financial irregularities in seasons
preceding but not including the last. If you don't know the facts, don't
waste bandwidth. The deduction is being deferred to the end of the season,
as if that makes any difference - still, it's the thought that counts.

This is a new development! We narrowly avoid relegation due to Ossie's
poor management last season, and then we are deducted six points for the
next season. I must say that this is awfully unfair.

Actually, Kelvin, the financial irregularites took place between 1985 and
1991. Not last season.

Kinda funny how it is always clubs that Ossie Ardiles is involved with that get
done for 'financial irregularities'...like Swindon and now Spurs. Are there any
more notables? I'm sure the Ardiles connection is just coincidence - was he
even at Spurs when the dodgy deals were going on?

Not sure about Swindon, but Ardiles was definitely not at Spurs during the
time the loans were being dished out. Well, in a managerial capacity that
is. I seem to recall that he may have been an early recipient of one of
the loans!

Anyone having a more clear explanation for this?

Spurs were fined, kicked out of this years FA Cup, and deducted 6 points from
the start of the season for making 'irregular' payments to players during the
time that Terry Venables was manager.

Oh, dear what a pity !!

As has already been pointed out 'poor management' had nothing to do with it. And
for the benefit of the person who mentioned 'tax fraud' I'd reiterate that there
was NO problem with the inland revenue either. I've got a newsletter explaining
the ins and outs of the ruling (and subsequent appeal) which I'll post tomorrow
if I get time.
