[Not getting any better for Liverpool, is it?]
Liverpool FC goalkeeper Chris Kirkland will not play again this season after
tests confirmed he suffered a serious knee injury.
The 21-year-old was hurt in a collision with Crystal Palace FC striker Dele
Adebola during yesterday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Selhurst Park, which
finished 0-0. A scan showed he had suffered a tear to the posterior cruciate
ligament in his right knee.
No date has yet been set for Kirkland's return, but the injury will
definitely keep him out for the remainder of the campaign. The injury is a
bitter blow to the player as he had only forced his way into the Liverpool
side last month after Jerzy Dudek was dropped because of poor form.
English Under-21 international Kirkland has impressed since being given his
chance, helping Liverpool reach the League Cup final, and was in line for
his first call-up to the England squad for a friendly match against
Australia on 12 February. He joined Liverpool from Coventry City FC in a
?10m deal in August 2001.
The injury means Poland No1 Dudek should return to the team and keep goal
for the rest of Liverpool's UEFA Cup campaign. Grard Houllier's men travel
to AJ Auxerre of France in the fourth round on 20 February, with the home
leg at Anfield following a week later.
