I'm not really familiar with the above, but will keep an eye out for
Mehmet Scholl in the Bundesliga.  He's not the best midfielder, but
he's having a great year for Bayern.  Vogts has passed him over for the
National team in the past so he probably will get some more playing
time, but is not going to have a lengthy career like Matthaeus, Moeller,
or Haessler.  But if he does play in Euro 96, I hope he does as well
as he is doing for Bayern.

IMHO,
Brad

Scholl's problem with getting a national team position is that he is
in direct competition with Haessler who is still playing great. It seems
like Scholl's time will come during World Cup 98. Germany currently has
an abundance of oustanding midfield players, and would be extremely tough
to beat if they weren't handicapped by having Vogts as manager.

Wrong! Macca is a winger, thus Edgar Davids is the best midfielder in Europe.
The guy can defend (ask Borussia Dortmund), the guy can dribble, the guy can
pass and can score. That is what you would want in a midfielder. EDGAR DAVIDS
is the man!

What's all this talk about Scholl and Haessler???

Everyone knows that the Danish creative midfielder, Michael Laudrup,
is the best.
The others are good sure, very good. But Laudrup at his best is just
amazing!

Of course, I agree with you. Anyone who knows soccer would. But there
are certain risks involved in playing with the ball so far in front of
you, as Laudrup does. Did you see Real - Ajax? Edgar Davids, who plays
with the ball almost under him, beat Laudrup in 100% of the duels. Of
course, this technique inhibits his passing somewhat, but I would
still pertain that Edgar Davids will be, and maybe already is, the
best midfield player in the world.

Laudrup is a great midfielder but he is very, very lazy and doesn't work
hard for the team. I'm not surprised that both Cryuff and Valdano had been
critical of him.

Having seen him in the 2 legs against Juve, your right.  He put on a
superb display in the Bernabaeu and was, quite frankly, shit in Turin.

Best midfielders in Europe?

Post by Paulo Taborda Tom » Wed, 03 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Hi, guys.
In my opinion the best midfielders in Europe are: as attacking
midfielders: Rui Costa, player of Fiorentina and Roberto Baggio, playing
in AC Milan; the best defensive midfielders i.e, anchorman's are: Paulo
Sousa from Juventus (one of the most influent player's of the last year's
champion team, not only recovering balls but also making excelent long
distance passes to the forword players) and Dessaily, player of AC Milan
(this men is an autentic "wall". He doesn't let any one pass thru the "wall"
that he and Albertini form. This invisible "wall" is the reason of the
solid defense of the best team of Milan).
There are also other excelent midfielders players in Europe in my
opinion. I'll give some examples: Didier Deschamps and Yugovic from
Juventus, Dino Baggio and Savicevic from Milan, Karomboeu from Sampdoria,
and Emerson, a player being whatched by many of the serie A teams in
Italy, from Oporto, Edgar Davids, Frank e Ronald de Boer from Ajax and
last but not least Mijatovic from Valencia that as alreaedy sign a
contract whit Real de Madrid and is a Player that every choach of the
world would like to have on their team.
In the modern football, in my opinion, the anchor position is a
position of major importance in the teams. If someone who understand of
tactics of football could sent me informations regarding that position
i would be apriciated.

Bye.

Both Baggio and Sousa are not playing as well as last season. This season
I think Savicevic and Costa have been the best playmakers in Serie A. Across
Europe, Djorkaeff and Ronald De Boer have been the best performers.

The best player in the world right now is Mijatovic of Valencia and
Yugoslavia. He is the most complete player around.
