Besiktas, the last 3 year's champion of the Turkish Soccer Leauge, finally
managed to beat the Nottingham Forest's almost 13-year old record (longest
undefeated team in a European Leauge) by extending their undefeated streak
to 43 games last Sunday.

The last time that Besiktas lost a game in the Turkish Leauge was against
Genclerbirligi in Ankara in March 31, 1990. They have not lost any leauge
game since that time. Their streak spreads across three seasons.

Another current contender in breaking Nottingham Forest's record is
AC Milan of Italy. They have just extended their unbeaten streak to 40
games last Sunday.

Congratulations BESIKTAS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Besiktas, indeed for having so copiously dominated the
Turkish premier soccer league!
Besides pure statisticking I see no other reason to compare Besiktas
to Nottingham and Milan, teams that had to face much stronger opposi-
tion in their victory stretches ....
BTW, what's Besiktas' record in the ECs?

Cheers!

Didn't either Celtic or Rangers go about 55 or 56 games unbeaten quite a few
years back. I thought the Forest record was only an English league record.

The date is March 31, 1991 instead of March 31, 1990. Sorry for the mistake.
It is still true that their streak spreads across three seasons.

I really would like to know if Celtic or Rangers record is true. Is there
anyone there to verify the European Record?

Hmm....... Besiktas may have faced weaker opposition but they also have a weaker team than Nottigham ( then ) and Ac Milan..... so it all works out fine
Give credit where credit is due.

Newcastle are about to break the longest winning streak held by an English team
. are we going to say just b/c it is in the Frist ( former second) division
they are facing weaker opposition. A record is a record no BUTS.

By writing that club X broke club Ys record one is implying that X is better
than Y. Therefore the comparasion of faced opposition is relevant (or
comparing such records are nonsense). Perhaps club X would have done much
better if faced with the opposition of Y.

I completely agree, and sounds very obvious, too.
Besides, in some countries you see that the 1st division league is always
won fron the usual one, two, or maximum three teams ...
I think that winning a championship in Italy is much more worth it than
10 in a row in Turkey...
Also, a lot of italian teams bought from abroad top-scorer players,
guys who scored tons of goal in their leagues, breaking any scoring
'record'; when they came to Italy a very low percentage of 'em were able
to score 50% of what they were used to score in their countries.
I think that statistics, especially talking about soccer, are really
meaningless, unless you consider the context in which any record has
been established.
