J-LEAGUE Round: 18 2nd Year

1) 17 Goals scored, 9 by Japanese, 7 by foreigners, 1 O.G.
2) S-Pulse in a hard fought battle win against JEF to stop their
downfall to 4 straight losses. Rookie Iwashita scored in sudden
death overtime.
3) Leaders Hiroshima lost to Marinos 2-1. Hiroshima were without
Korean international Noh and Marinos without Argentinian Medina
Bello who are both World Cup bound.
4) Zico scored his first J-League goal of the season on a free kick.
He helped Kashima beat Osaka 3-1.
5) Ogura of Grampus made his J-League debut, he was quite good but
could not prevent Nagoya from losing to Verdy 2-1.
6) The next J-League round will see Hiroshima paly S-Pulse and
Fluegels play Kashima. So it will be 1 against 2 and 3 against 4,
in what could be a crucial weekend for the Suntory Series.
7) Brazilian Bettinho was back after a month absence. He had broken
his nose about a month earlier. Bellmare still lost 3-0.
8) Urawa Reds winning streak was stopped at 2 when they lost 1-0 to
hot boys Jubilo from an 89' goal by rookie Yuzawa.
9) Total Attendance 123,746. Average ...

Can anyone clear up why most games attract 10-20,000 fans, but every week
there's always one that attracts 50,000+ And no, it's always between
a different pair of teams, so it's not that one club is way out ahead
in terms of popularity.

Simple: most stadiums where J-league games are played are relatively small. The professional soccer league in Japan just started, so most teams didn't put much money on building larger stadiums (actually, some of them don't even have a stadium, like Panasonic Gamba, which currently uses a small stadium
at Banpaku Expo70 in Suita for their home games). The 50000 crowd games are those played at the National Stadium in Tokyo, where the Toyota Cup is also held every year.

Simple: Japan has only one football stadium that can hold over 50,000
people, the National Stadium in Tokyo. It is not used as the home
ground for any of the teams, instead one match (decided at random, or
so it seems) is played there every week, and this match usually -- no,
always! -- attracts a (near-)full house which attests to the
popularity of football in Japan.

The minimum requirement for the J-League teams' home stadiums is a
capacity of 15,000 spectators, but in fact I think not all of the
teams meet that requirement yet (at least Verdy and JEF don't, I
believe); most do but no more than that, and only some have bigger
stadiums (Hiroshima, Osaka).

There are lots of plans to build bigger stadiums if Japan were to get
awarded the organisation of the 2002 World Cup, which is why this is
so important for Japanese football.
