CLUB OR COUNTRY POLL RESULTS

Post by Palace » Sat, 04 Jun 1994 10:49:02

Remember the poll I undertook a couple of weeks ago?  The question
was, "Given the choice, would you rather your club team won the
championship/cup or your country won the World Cup?"  Well, here are
the (unscientific) results...

(Posted by country of origin...prefer club...prefer country)

England  Club to win...22     Country to win...6
Canada  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
Australia  Club to win...0     Country to win...6
Croatia  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
Germany  Club to win...8     Country to win...0
Israel  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
Brazil  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
USA  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
Argentina  Club to win...0     Country to win...2
Scotland  Club to win...5     Country to win...0

TOTAL  Club to win...35     Country to win...24

Some comments...
1.  Interesting, given the slandering of Englishmen (and women) on
R.S.S. that by far the greatest number of responses came from us.
Yeah, I know this isn't scientific, but if we act like we own R.S.S.,
perhaps it's because we do!  :-)

2.  Only three countries had entries preferring club to country, out
of ten countries that offered responses, yet in these three
countries...arguably the only three that have really serious domestic
leagues...club victory was overwhelmingly preferable. (n.b.  The
seriousness of Brazilian domestic football is most certainly open to
debate.)

3.  At least on the evidence of this poll, football evokes the most
passion at club level in Europe.

4.  By and large, the countries that preferred national team success
(Australia, Canada, USA, Israel) have either no real domestic league,
or perhaps leagues that might arguably be called "uncompetitive."

5.  And, leading on from question four, fans in countries where there
is a real choice between good club football and good international
football  obviously savour their club football more.

--all of which leads to the conclusion that FIFA sold America a bill
of goods!  You thought you were getting the big one, but the
Endsleigh League Playoffs are still being held at Wembley...SUCKERS!

First, let me apologize for the rest of the net because

i'm just about to say one or two words to this fellow:

what a dumb and stupid load of ***you just said!!

man, you should take a trip to brasil and see what

passion at club level is all about. Let me tell you something,

it's not uncommon for people to be buried with his or her club

flag inside the coffin.

have you ever been to a Boca Juniors (from Argentina)?

i've been to two games that Boca played in my home town for

the Libertadores da America and if that's not passion,

I don't know what passion is.

But then again, I understand you need to find something good

to say about british soccer, don't you?

See you in 98 (or maybe not?)

Ricardo

PalaceFC, you got it!!!

You said the dumbest thing I have ever heard about soccer in Europe being
better... How can you say this??

How can you say people in Europe has more passion with their clubs? Here in
Brazil there are people that save money from the lunch and dinner to buy a
ticket to see a match! People kill or is killed by some crazy guys that
think one should be judged by the club that supports...

It is easy to go to the stadia if your team always win everything (Ex.
Barcelona, Milan) and you go by car and had lunch and everything...
In Europe only the best teams make the stadia full!

DIFFICULT IS TO GO THE STADIA IN CROWDED OLD BUSES WITH KILLERS AND ROBBERS,
HUNGRY, TO SEE THE SUPPORTED TEAM LOSE! NOT KNOWING IF YOU WILL GET HOME
ALIVE!!!

There are alot of people in Europe that are unemployed and pay nearly half there weekly benefit to see one match. In particular the north east of England has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe and whose clubs have packed out stadia every week. They say England has a *** problem, well enough said.

Newcastle United had one of the highest average attendances of the
Premier division last season... and Sunderland don't do too badly
either! :-)
