VIDEO: Aston Villa vs Rapid Vienna - Villa crash out of Europe

Villa needed to win by two clear goals after Jelavic gave the Austrian
side a 1-0 win in the first leg and they were well on their way to
securing the result when a James Milner penalty and a superb solo goal
from John Carew put them 2-0 up.

But in the last 20 minutes Villa collapsed under pressure and Rapid,
who impressed throughout, could have scored a hatful of goals to win
the tie on the night, while Ashley Young missed a 30th-minute penalty
for the hosts.

It was a rollercoaster of a game. The hosts had an eighth-minute
chance, with Milner let down by a poor cross when he was put through
down the right by the returning Carew.

The England winger should have played it low to Emile Heskey, but he
aimed a high, fast centre that evaded his head and outstretched leg.

The next 20 minutes saw Rapid give as good as they got but with
neither side able to find a final ball to match decent build-up play.

Villa had a chance to go ahead on the half-hour mark but, after
winning a spot-kick with a determined run down the left that drew
fouls first from Andreas Dober and then Markus Heikkinen, Ashley Young
put the penalty weakly into the arms of Helge Payer.

He went some way to making amends, though, when - seven minutes later
- a similar left-wing dribble led Dober to haul him down in the area.

Milner stepped up this time, and showed Young how to do it with a
powerful, high finish into the right-hand side of the goal.

The second half was yet more entertaining, with Rapid coming at Villa,
who sat deep and played on the break but looked hesitant and
disorganised at the back.

Rapid's German skipper Steffen Hoffman was denied an equaliser three
minutes in when his goal-bound drive was somehow headed off the line
by Carlos Cuellar.

Carew almost netted with the cheekiest of backheels on 50 minutes, but
his drag-back after Heskey's cross dribbled agonisingly wide of the
far post.

He got his goal three minutes later, in his first appearance of the
season following a toe injury.

Milner played the ball down the right wing and Carew, not famed for
his pace, ran away from Ragnvald Soma, cut into the box and - with
Rapid's defence expecting a cross to Heskey - the Norway striker
drilled a surprise low shot inside the near post.

Young came close to making it three but his rasping low drive was well-
saved by Payer, with Milner unable to convert the loose ball.

Villa were in control but, from the position of strength, they fell
apart.

The introduction of Stefan Maierhofer, who at 6'8" is one of the
tallest men to play in European competition, was a turning point.

With decent pace and touch to add to his incredible height, the former
chef gave Villa's back four a torrid time and, with 15 minutes
remaining, his acrobatic attempt at a bicycle kick gave Jelavic a
simple tap in but he somehow put the ball wide of the open goal.

The one-capped Croatian forward made amends a minute later though,
when Maierhofer again caused problems, this time racing on to a
Hoffman through-ball to force a point-blank save from Guzan.

This time Jelavic made no mistake with the finish, placing it into the
bottom right.

The away goal spurned Villa on, and Fabian Delph stung the palms of
Payer with a superb left-foot shot.

They were aimless in their delivery, though, knocking it long and
failing to break down the resilient visiting defence, while Rapid
calmly looked to play their way down the flanks and create a killer
second goal.

They should have got it, too, but Jelavic was responsible for a
shocking miss with five minutes remaining, putting over the bar after
a goal-mouth scramble instigated by the mighty Maierhofer saw him once
more presented with an open goal.

Villa had a dubious late penalty claim waved away by the excellent
Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo as Rapid held out for a famous
'victory' that sees them enter the group stage draw in Monaco on Friday

What would be the point of Villa going through anyway? They'd only get to
the Quarter-Finals and field a reserve team and get beat then. So they
might as well get it out of the way now and spare O'Neill having to worry
about fixture congestion next Spring!
