Good question... I was sure that Italy would have lost the spot, but
many acknowledgeable friends told me that in the UEFA Cup each
federation may choose its teams with no particular rules, so that
Milan will be replaced by another Italian team.
In any case, there's plenty of chances for Roma to be in the EuroCups
next year... They may reach a UEFA spot in the Championship, or win
the UEFA Cup, or win the Coppa Italia, or even losing the final vs.
Sampdoria if the latter wins the Championship...

A question on Milan's suspension

the number of Italian teams in EC or not)

I believe the situation is a bit more complicated. As you may know, AJAX
was banned this year for all EC competitions because of the problems
during their match against Austria Wien in 1989 (if my memory serves me
well - in fact that applies to the rest of the story too), the goalkeeper
was injured by an iron stick. Now, for the 90-91 EC competition, the Dutch
Footbal Association was allowed to replace Ajax if the team would qualify for
EC 2 or UEFA cup, but not for EC 1.
Now, as a typical Dutch football fan, I support my favourite team (Ajax of
course) in the national competition but any Dutch team in Europa Cup. It was
therefore with mixed emotions that I saw Ajax take the championship last
year, thus leaving us with no team in EC 1.
A feat they will not repeat this year, after their dramatic loss against
PSV (4-1). How dramatic you can tell from Louis' opinion on referee Houben.
("Manipulation scandal in Dutch Football"). Although I thought leftwing
Bryan Roy receiving the Red Card that Jan Wouters should have got was a bit
unfair (and a pity for the game, Roy was one of the best), blaming the
referee for Ajax' defeat is nonsense and overlooks Ajax lack of selfcontrol.
The mere fact that Houben did not give Wouters the red card is evidence
enough that he was not against Ajax. I have rarely seen this kind of
harassment towards the ref go unpunished. (Still, I have a soft spot for
Wouters. I like a player with heart and soul, and I admire his commitment
just as I admired Maradona's tears after the WC final. Let's just hope that
Wouters will not find out where that soft spot is ;-)

Another remark on Saverio's posting (I seem to be rambling on a bit..):
I do not think that national Football Associations are entirely free
in determining which teams will play in the UEFA cup. As I recall, a few
years ago the Dutch Football Association wanted to introduce 4 period
champions over the season, that would play each other after the season was
finished for 1 UEFA cup place. After 1 or 2 seasons this plan was abandoned
again, because UEFA vetoed the idea for fearing that not the best team
would enter the UEFA cup.
