Cantona sent off

Cantona sent off

Post by George Leav » Tue, 09 Aug 1994 23:00:07

Well, it has happened again. Cantona has been sent off. And yet again it was
in dubious circumstances. Now I know, before everyone complains, that the
actual lunge that got him the red card probably was a bookable offence. It was
a stupid thing to do and could have seriously injured Pressley (it was him wasn't
it?) if Cantona had made contact. But what pisses me off is the way that Pressley
was getting away with some dirty play yet the ref offered no protection to Cantona.
I mean, when Pressley fouled Cantona, they both ended up with a yellow card.
Then Cantona goes and does something stupid and gets sent off. But Pressley's
tackles were from behind. So much for FIFA trying to stamp this out.
Unfortunately Eric does seem to have a short fuse and so other players are going
to take advantage of this. Surely the refs should do something about the fouls
from behind before Cantona has a chance to over react.

I'm sure the press will have a field day with this. But again, people love to see
Cantona in trouble. Were you aware that Gary Ablett (Everton) had been sent off
twice during the pre-season friendlies? Was this all over the papers? Errrr NO!

Cantona sent off

From what I heard, he was sent off for a second bookable offence, and the first one was
rather harsh to say the least.  I believe the first yellow card was for dissent after he
turned his back on the referee.  Mind you, after reading what I did in the newspaper last
night (okay, so they aren't exactly the best place in the world to search for facts, but they
are usually *reasonably* accurate if you can get past the bias in the writing style) about
Cantona's past exploits, I really hope he gets banend for the rest of the century ...

No, but that's because Ablett is ***(and a ***scouser at that).

What were you saying about the bias in the writing style? So you want him banned for
the rest of the century. Well that doesn't surprise me coming from a Liverpool fan. It
would certainly make things easier for Liverscum  if Cantona was banned :-)

If Cantona was booked for dissent then I feel the ref was over reacting. From what I saw
on TV Cantona didn't seem to turn his back until the card had been flashed. Anyway,
it was supposed to be a friendly. The ref didn't even have to report Cantona, in which
case he would not miss any games at the start of the season.
There was also the case of Hughes being hacked but the ref did nothing. Hughes then
threw the ball towards the offending player. The ref thought this was a bookable offence.
He booked Hughes and then booked the other bloke. It seems that refs take a dimmer view
of someone getting annoyed at being fouled than the actual foul itself. Surely if referees gave
players some sort of protection and punished the right people then players would be less
likely to over-react.

Now there is a familiar occurance United players pointing things out to the
referee. If refs are going to take similar action throughout the season then
Ferguson may be struggling to field a side by Christmas.
Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Roy Keane etc be warned.

No, it "was" a sending off offence.

What should have pissed you off was when Pressley? brought down Giggs
a few minutes later with a vicious tackle having made no attempt to get
the ball he wasn't even spoken to by the ref. let alone booked. When
the United players pointed this out to the ref. he booked one of them

Having watched the charity shield yesterday it looks like United
won't be the only team with selection problems once the season gets
going. Seven bookings in a "friendly" game where there wasn't one
what you would call hard tackle. If this keeps up teams will have to
get much larger squads.
