Paraguay and Argentina have guaranteed spots in World Cup 1998 after
winning their qualifying matches on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Colombia was
also very close to guaranteeing a spot after being tied to Venezuela at
home, after one period of play.
In Santiago, Argentina surprised the hosts and won their game 2-1,
becoming the second team to qualify for the World Cup in Wednesday's
action. Before them, Bulgaria had already guaranteed a spot in the
European zone, after defeating Russia 1-0.
Paraguay became the third team to qualify on Wednesday, after beating
Bolivia at home, 2-1.
Meanwhile, twice World Champions Uruguay gave up all their hopes of
qualifying after losing to Peru in Lima, also by a score of 2-1.
Colombia could have become the fourth team to qualify on Wednesday. For
that to happen they only had to defeat last place Venezuela, playing
hosts to them in Barranquilla. At the end of the first half the score
was still 0-0.
