Suker going for gold
Suker top scored with six goals in 1998
Croatia striker Davor Suker has set his sights on making World Cup history
by becoming the first player to win successive Golden Boot awards.
The forward finished top scorer in 1998 in France as Croatia made it through
to the semi-finals on their finals debut.
We have younger players in our squad this time and a win in our first match
would help our confidence
At 34 years of age Suker is in the twilight of his career, but he has still
set himself some lofty goals for Japan and Korea.
"I want to play and I want to be the best goalscorer again," he said.
"No-one has ever done it and it would make me very proud if I could do it.
"If I can get one or two goals in the first match then anything is
Suker faces competition from Bosko Balaban and Goran Vlaovic for the right
to partner Alen Boksic in attack for Croatia, who get their campaign
underway against Mexico on 3 June.
And Suker believes the opening game will be the key to Croatia emulating
their achievements of four years ago.
"In 1998 we beat Jamaica in the first match and everything went well from
there," he said.
"Now we need another good start because you don't want to fall behind.
"We have younger players in our squad this time and a win in our first match
would help our confidence."
