Subject: US-Switzerland report
Hello Chris:
I'm in working on my soccer newsletter, so I'll forward this to you.
Press release from Dean Linke, U.s. National Team Press Officer:
Last-Minute Own Goal Earns USA 1-1 Tie with Switzerland
Fullerton, Calif. (Saturday, Jan. 22) -- The United States benefitted
from an own goal with two minutes left in the match to tie Switzerland 1-1
in front of a capacity crowd at Titan Stadium on the California State
University-Fullerton campus.
The two teams will meet again to open the 1994 World Cup Group A
competition on June 18 in the Pontiac Silverdome outside of Detroit.
The U.S.A. equalized when midfielder Cobi Jones crossed the ball from
the left wing into a pack of players inside the penalty box. U.S. defender
Alexi Lalas and Swiss captain Andy Egli challenged for the ball and Egli
headed it into his own net as Lalas applied pressure on his back.
Switzerland had gone ahead in the 65th minute when forward Nestor
Subiat's driven shot from 15 yards out was knocked down by U.S. goalkeeper
Brad Friedel and forward Sebastien Fournier cracked the rebound home from
10 yards. The two-shot sequence resulted in just the second and third shots
of the game for Switzerland as a stingy U.S. defense kept the Swiss attack
in check for most of the math. The Americans caught Switzerland offside 15
times in the match, while the Americans were offside just once. Fried was
forced to make just two saves.
The USA outshot the Swiss 6-3, with Lalas and midfielder Claudio Reyna,
a second-half substitute, coming close to scoring on head balls.
The match marked the return to action of U.S. forward Peter Vermes, who
made his 68th appearance for the United States. Vermes had missed several
months recuperating from back surgery and hadn't played since Oct. 16,
1993, against Ukraine.
Up next for the USA is a match against World cup qualifier Russia Jan.
29 at the Kingdome in Seattle. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PST. The U.S. will then
participate in the Carlsberg Cup in Hong Kong Feb. 10-13 featuring the
United States, Denmark, Romania and Hong Kong. The US. will meet 1992
European National cup champion Denmark Feb. 10. The winner of that match
will meet the inner of the Romania-Hong Kong match, while the losers also
will square off. Both games will be played Feb. 13.
The USA will compete in the Joe Robbie Cup, scheduled for Feb. 18 and 20
at Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium. That four team-tournament will feature the
USA, Colombia, Bolivia and Sweden. The United States will play Bolivia Feb.
18 (6:30 EST) and Sweden Feb. 20 (3 p.m. EST). U.S. Soccer officials today
announced a match against South Korea March 12 at Titan Stadium in
Fullerton, Calif. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PST.
Attendance at the U.S. Switzerland match was reported as 10,175.
