Just curious...will Sam's Army or other USA supporters be at this
qualifier to be played at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium? I heard tickets
are already on sale.

[call to Sam's Army for the Canada-USA game in Burnaby]

British Columbia.  It's an eastern suburb of Vancouver.

By the way, tickets are available through TicketBastard.  You can
access their webpage at http://www.ticketmaster.ca.

Cheers, Howard

The answer is of course, yes.  I just heard that tickets are on sale,
so I bought ten!  I've posted the information on the NA Soccer and
Sounders Super Ultras mailing list.  As HHH mentioned in a followup
post, check the Ticketmaster website at http://SportToday.org/.  I
bought mine through Seattle Ticketmaster at 206.628.0888.

In typical Ticketmaster fashion, ten $15 (Canadian) seats run you
$217.  That's not a misprint, it's $67 in service charges.

Thank you to everyone for the helpful info!  I just bought 4 tickets
myself in Section J while visiting the www.ticketmaster.ca page.
Sounds like quite a few USA fans will be there...cool!

Will a Canadian resident please explain why a big WCQ final round game
against the neighboring country is being played at a 6,600-capacity polo
ground?

Is the situation that dismal in Canada?

I'll be there, although I don't kow of any planned Sam's Army contingent.
Tickets went on sale on the 1st of Feb, I believe, and as the capacity of
Swangard is around 5,000?, not a whole lot are left.

To purchase tickets, go to "http://www.TicketMaster.ca" and type
"Swangard" in the search vehicle. Or call (206) 628-0888 in Seattle or
(604) 280-4444 in Vancouver to purchase what little seats remain! We need
some Americans there on Novermber 9!

Besides, it'll probably be 2097 before we get another USA qualifying
match this close to Seattle.

See you in BC on Nov. 9,

Newell

No, but the weather is.  You'd be taking an awful risk scheduling a
game for Toronto or Edmonton in November -- and even if the weather
cooperated, the playing surface could still be in pretty rough shape.
The worst you'll see in Vancouver is torrential rain, but Swangard
Stadium's improved field drainage system should be able to handle that
(unlike that "romp in a swamp" of an MLS final).

And as for our little 8000-seat "polo ground", I'd put the consistancy
and quality of its playing surface as well as the aesthetics of its
surroundings up against any stadium in the world, thank you very much.
See ya in November!

Cheer,
Alan Douglas,

> Is the situation that dismal in Canada?

Yes.  The fact of the matter is that most large Canadian cities
(Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto being the most significant) all have
indoor stadiums with artificial turf.  FIFA does not allow the use of
surfaces other than natural grass for official matches (thank god) and
therefore Canadian WC qualifiers have had to be played in university
stadiums.  Since College football is NOT a national obsession in Canada
(again, thank god), such stadiums tend to have a small seating
capacity.
Edmonton has a large natural turf stadium that has been used for a
number of Canada's international matches, but the crowd size at these
games has not justified the use of the larger venue.  Vancouver is
probably Canada's soccer capital (mainly because of the weather) and the
attendance at Swangard stadium tends to be good.

Without a major professional soccer or football league to justify the
existence of large facilities acceptable to FIFA, Canada will continue
playing its home internationals in small stadiums like Swangard.

MDT.

ps: I'm going to be at the game in Palo Alto on March 16.  See you
there!

Not too dismal. They have already scheduled 4 of the 6 matches in the
60,000 capacity Commonwealth stadium and decided that it may not be
suitable to play in November there in sub-zero temperatures.
Also, Canada plays best at Swangard, where they train.
