FIFA player awards, Best Striker Ronaldo, Best Midfielder Zidane...

I think the FIFA and other player awards should be in 4 categories - for
Best Striker, Midfielder, Defender and Goalkeeper.

I would give them to Ronaldo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos and Schmeichel.

Otherwise how can you compare Peruzzi to Batistuta except with some
arbitrary contrived measures.  Anyone agree?

In Australia it is hard to see much soccer.

They are not a soccer nation but when I saw Ronaldo
I was mightily impressed.

As for  Schmeichel he is from Man Utd and they suck bad.

I agree, to some extent. The point is that if you understand football
you should be bale to take into account the player's position when
making a judgement on his position. Obviously you don't expect Peruzzi
to score as many goals as Batistuta... or any goals really.

But I really think that the problem is that with the average football
spectator (like me for instance) that strikers stick in your mind very
easily. But people deciding on these awards should be knowledgable
enough to see beyond GOALS SCORED.

You could perhaps look at what they're supposed to do and compare that
to what they do. You could look at other players in the same position to
gauge whether their good in that position but it doesn't help you see
whether they're good footballers...

Confusing?
I don't see what you mean. If you mean because some might not see how
two players that play very different positions can be compared... maybe.

This is football not a sport where you can give players a number to
quantify their performance. So any choice is always going to be
subjective and arguable at best..

Not the same thing at all... these players all make up a team. They have
to play together as well as individually.

I repeat...

Easy, the player who gets more media exposure throughout the season,
will stick in the voters mind more and have more chance of winning
the vote.

Seriously, to some degree, your argument can be pushed even further,
How do you actually prove one player in a particular position is
better than another player who plays in the same position?

The difference between the player of the year trophy and the
FIFA rankings, is that one of these actually present their flawed
method.

How?  Is Peruzzi better than Batistuta?  Do you use an illogical guess as
to relative importance to the team?

I also think a list that compares players from different positions is
confusing and hard to read.  Whereas Ronaldo, Batistuta, Bergkamp,
Mijatovic, Shevchenko as a list of the best strikers, you can make
comparisons easily.

This doesn't sound very helpful in deciding.

Exactly why separate awards would be useful.  Compare the players that
'stick in your mind more easily' together.

If you want to give awards for cars, you separate trucks from sports cars
because comparing trucks and sports cars is the same as comparing strikers
and goalkeepers, it doesn't make sense.

What makes this post so funny is that you are 100% correct.
Look no further than reality to find the best humor.

Your attack and midfield are ok, but in defense and goalkeeper I have some
better suggestions, so the row becomes
attack: Ronaldo
midfield: Zidane
defense: Olisey (Nigeria/Ajax)
Goal: Van de Sar (Netherlands/Ajax)

You forgot to add the obvious additional choice: to not give a ***.
