FAQ for "One-Nil" or "Goal"?

Post by Ted Fra » Wed, 26 Oct 1994 10:22:45

I find these two football-manager games from Wizard to be great, but
as an American, I sometimes feel at a loss in trying to devise consistent
and workable strategies for my teams.  Is there a FAQ out there, or a good
book on soccer strategy?

Ted,

There's a review and a hints/tips section on Goal 2.0 by Wizard Games in
GameBytes Magazine issue # 19 (both by Sir Lancelot du Lake).

Some good books on soccer strategy available in the US:

The Official Soccer Book of the United States Soccer Federation
Walter Chyzowych

Soccer Tactics and Teamwork
Charles Hughes

The Manual of Soccer Coaching
Roy Rees

For other soccer games, check out the FAQ I just posted to this group.

I'm afraid real soccer strategy is somewhat different from that in "Goal".
I mean it won't help you a lot in the game "Goal" by reading books on soccer
strategy. I think it is always fun to experiment out different lineups and
strategies in "Goal" in order to find one best-fit to my team. Go experimenting
and I hope you can achieve something. Win the World Cup!

I would suggest you try your best to secure your defense, and all midfielders/
forwards should be good at shooting. And if you play Italy, NEVER DROP GIANINNI!

I just got a mailing from the US distributor (Tom Fitzgerald) that new
versions of both Goal and 1-0 are now out.

Anyone seen them.

Cheers, Chris

FAQ for "One-Nil" or "Goal"?

Post by Steven Rub » Wed, 26 Oct 1994 14:16:28

Ted, fancy meeting you in rec.sport.soccer!

One thing I've found with One-Nil is that the scores are much lower when
you actually watch a match than if you use Quick Result.  I always manage
Wrexham, and if I watch an entire season's matches, they'll score 30-40
goals in a 30-match season, and if I've got a good team they'll give up
20-30.  If I run a season using Quick Result, the scoring will go up about
50%.

I've found the help file that comes with the game is very useful in
explaining some basic tactics; the section that explains what skills are
good for which positions is also nice, especially when you have to move
players out of position because of injuries or whatever.

What seemed to work for me (in Goal especially) when playing against a much
stronger side, was to cover (man-to-man) top scorers of the opposing team
with 2 (if not 3) of my players.

Check out the FAQ that was posted here and I think in rec.sport.soccer just
the past week or so.  It lists plenty of addresses.

FAQ for "One-Nil" or "Goal"?

One thing to remember, in One-Nil, unless you use quick result mode all
the time, ditch all your centre forwards because they all have medicore
shoot accuracy skill and won't score much if you watch the game.
Because of this I use only strikers.

No such problem in Goal though.

There is of course, the problem with hiring good youth players.
