The following is a press release issued Saturday, June 11, by the U.S. women's
national team press officer:

U.S. WOMEN'S NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM ADVANCES TO THE FINAL OF THE OHIO WOMEN'S
INTERNATIONAL SOCCER EXTRAVAGANZA WITH A 7-0 WIN OVER CANADA

   CINCINNATI (Saturday, June 11, 1993) -- The U.S. Women's National Soccer
Team proved to be too much for Canada this evening in a 7-0 trouncing at the
College Football Hall of Fame's Galbreath Field in the inaugural Ohio Women's
International Soccer Extravaganza. The U.S. women, 2-0-0 in tournament play,
secured a spot in the 8 p.m. championship match Saturday, June l9, at Galbreath
Field .
"We played a tremendous match," said U.S. head coach Anson Dorrance. "I was
very pleased with the way our starters performed and our reserves were
impressive . "
   U.S. midfielder Kristine Lilly gave the Americans a 1-0 lead in the first
minute of play when she trapped a save which deflected of f Canada's goalkeeper
Carla Chin. She blasted a right-footed shot to the upper-right corner of the
net . It was Lilly's third goal of the tournament and 12th goal in 54
international matches.
   U.S. forward Michelle Akers-Stahl, the USA's all-time leader in full
international appearances with 57 and goals with 54, connected for two goals.
Akers-Stahl leads the tournament in scoring with four goals in two matches.
U.S. goalkeeper Mary Harvey, who was expected to start, suffered a knee injury
in the team' s warm-up session, and was replaced by Saskia Webber.
   Webber, making her third start of the season for the USA, was never
challenged by the Canadians, saving two Canadian shots.
   The USA returns to action when they take on Italy Tuesday, June 15, at Arlin
Field in Mansfield, Ohio, kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Italy, 1-0-0, plays tomorrow in
Toledo, Ohio, at DeVilbiss Field against the U.S. Amateur Team at 2 p.m.
