Dennis Bergkamp arrived in Japan

Post by JPV » Sun, 16 Jun 2002 05:24:07

After a almost two year journey, Holland hitman Dennis Bergkamp today
arrived in Japan only to discover that his team had been eliminated
six months ago. Bergkamp had followed the route of famous explorer
Japan De Gama who first discovered the islands in 1322. Using boat,
train, mule, bicycle, space hopper and pedalo Bergkamp's tortuous 712
day journey finally ended when he swam from China to Japan last week.

As he clawed himself up the beach an exhausted Bergkamp was met by
Dutch FA officials who told him that if he hurried back he might be in
time for the 2004 European Championships.

Isn't Van Baston afraid of flying too?  And Cruffy wouldn't go to Agentina
in 1978 because of security reason.  Holland sure has her share of freak
players.

I'm not Dutch, but I don't see that as being all that insulting; certainly
not worthy of the response it got. I more saw it as a bemusing observation;
the truth of which cannot be denied if it's true about Van Basten and
Cruyff.

Why? Do you deny that fear of flying, for example,  in a football player is
a little bit unusual, given the sort of travelling that is common in
football?

Bergkamps fear of flying originates from his early days at Ajax, when a couple
of teammates were part of the Zambian squad to die in a plane crash returning
from a WC qualifier
