Say, what would be the greatest upset of all time?
And what was the biggest margin of victory or most goals
scored in a match, in a full-international and in
world-cup competition (including qualifications)?

Well, 4th Division Colchester's win over the then champians Leeds in the early
1970's FA Cup always springs to mind, as does Wrexham's win over Arsenal a
couple of years ago, and Bolton's campaign this season won't be forgotten in
a hurry!

Well, two of the greatest upsets of all times were when England lost to the
USA in one of the earlier world cups and then when Italy lost to Korea in
the world cup of 1966. Faroe Island's win over...(can't remember..think it
was Belgium) was another upset. And, of course, let us not forget last
Wednesday's 1-0 win of Malta over Belgium. However, I do think that one of
the greatest upsets of all time was the last time when Uruguay won the world
cup. It was in the final against Brazil, and all Brazil had to do was draw.
Brazil were looking invincible at the time but Uruguay still managed to win.
As for the greatest margin in a match, records for the English First Division
league (before the Premier Division was set up) show a 26-0 win. I don't know
who the teams were. On the international scene, in the world cup of 1982 in
Spain, Hungary recorded a 12-0 (I think) win over some African team. A similar
result was recorded by Spain over Malta in the qualifications for the Nations
Cup in France 1988 (I'm not sure about this one either).
Sorry if my reports are filled with NOT SURE'S but my memory is a bit rusty
on these points....the years seem to be having some effect...some joke, at 23.

Don't know about the old First Division, but without checking, are you
talking about Preston NE (?) v Hyde Utd in the FA Cup. That, I seem to
remember was a 26-0 win. Not sure about the dates, but the 1920's sound
familiar.

The Scottish Cup record is 36-0 to Arbroath against Bon Accord, but
probably pre-turn of the century. Incidentally, I think that one of the
Scottish Premier clubs (Aberdeen ?) have the phrase 'bon accord' in their
club badge. Is there a connection? I could of course be mistaken. I'm
trying to remember this from the days I used to collect the Panini stickers.

El Salvador?

I go with the USA-England result. I think the Faroes beat Denmark.

Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982. Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9-0 in 1974.
There was a game in one of the earlier cups when it was single KO system
all the way that ended 7-6. I think it involved Switzerland and/or Austria.
Not sure though.

I guess some people have different definitions of what
constitutes an 'upset' in a match. I wouldn't classify
winning a match by 10-0 while you were expected to win
by 5-1 or so as an upset.

I like thinking of upsets in terms of underdogs winning
vs great teams. Some examples posted here involving
British teams were of this kind.

Here's one that would be classified an upset by my
definition:

        Hungary 1 - Turkey 3 (I think this was
in Hungary) during the heyday of the
Hungarian team led by Ferenc Puskas,
        possibly 1951 or thereabouts.

Any win by Malta, Cyprus, Faroes, San Marino etc. would also
classify as an upset, if against a team perceived to
be better than middling.

The Faroes beat Austria 1-0 in Landskrona, Sweden, in their first qualifying
match for the European Championship 1992.  (The match was in 1990.)

10-1 over El Salvador (which is not in Africa).  The same margin was obtained
by Yugoslavia against Zaire, in 1974 (9-0).

Counting World Cup qualifiers, the biggest margin of victory was 13, when
New Zealand met Fiji in the WCQ 1982 (13-0).

That was 12-1.

Austria beat Switzerland 7-5 in the 1954 QF.  Incidentally, the 1954 Cup had
first round groups.

Of course, but the original post also asked for largest margins of
victory.

February 1956, in a friendly in Istanbul.  The first loss of the Hungarians
after the World Cup Final in 1954, and one of the last matches played by that
famous team.

Well, if you included Scottish cup matches...Hearts win on Sunday!
They didn't score that second goal, no really they didn't. I saw the
match live. They never had the ball in the second half. They couldn't
possibly have scored....could they?

        Oh well, maybe next time......

There is no doubt in my mind, that the greatest upset of all time was so
unbelievable that the reporters thought it was a misprint and reported
what they thought was the "correct" score.

USA 1, England 0 in the 1950 World Cup Finals in Brasil.

When the score went over the wire, journalists thought it was a misprint.
and reported the score as USA 1, England 10 which was much more believable,
and, no doubt, expected.

The gap between the minnows and giants of yesteryear has closed considerably
and "upsets" will occur all the time now.  Malta 1, Belgium 0 has hardly
left me gasping.

But the biggest upset in _recent_ times, I have to say, is:

West Germany 1, Algeria 2 in the 1982 World Cup Finals in Spain.

I remember watching that match and couldn't believe how well the Africans
played.  West Germany were (are) contenders/favourites in virtually every
World Cup.  Amazingly, they recovered from this disaster to achieve yet
another World Cup Final.  But the emergence of African football was never
more evident than on the day Algeria outplayed the Germans.
