Newcastle=Leeds What other big EPL clubs have gone down for a long time??

Post by chris » Mon, 06 Apr 2009 20:55:46

After yesterdays trouncing by Chelsea, I have to predict, Alan Shearer
aside, that Newcastle is headed for relegation.  Boro and West Brom are
surely gone, Newcastle's only chance, it seems to me, is to overtake
Sunderland.

I have only been following the EPL for the last 10 years or so.  The
only situation similar to this, that I have seen, where a massive club
went down, was what happened to Leeds.  And Leeds fell all the way
through the Championship and is languishing in League One.

Have there been other similar situations in the past that are as
noteworthy?

A sidelight on this is two current Newcastle players, although buried
on the bench, Mark Viduka and Alan Smith, were on the Leeds squad that
went down.

Nottingham Forest immediately comes to mind. They were once European
Champions!

Indeed. "City's coming up but they always go back down" I remember your lot
singing with glee.

But you know I never joined in with that song...:-)

This could very well happen to Newcastle. It's my impression that they've
been spending quite freely, and with the drop in income a relegation
causes, their financial situation will be very difficult.

Oxford have never been "massive".

Not only have they spent freely but also poorly. When they have made
seemingly good buys such as Duff, they turn out to be flops also.

That goes without saying. If they had been spending wisely, they
wouldn't be in this mess.
