So two out of three full-time draws have been decided by REAL goals rather
than penalty kicks.  Is anyone else very happy about this?

And the Ire-Spain match was as active a 30 minutes as could possibly have
been hoped for, given the Irish fatigue and Spain down a man.

yep, its great
i never understood why teams would be scared in ET, i mean, penalties are
just a total lottery, why would you want to go through that. unless you
think your team is so much worse than the others, then i never understood
the playing for pens approach.

Yes! Especially that the teams seem to be playing to score that goal, rather
than stalling to get to the shoot-out.

Maybe a bit more extra time (another 15mins) wouldn't be such a bad idea.

RstJ
good game, won by a great goal.

I'm with Cathi... I prefer replays!

Ahh, given the opportunity that would be preferrable.  (No way that can
happen in many situations, particularly the WC.)

It certainly CAN happen.  Maybe pressure from TV rights, sponsorships,
etc. are high, but why can't they do it?

How about pressure on fans who are spending well over 100 (euros, UD$) per
night to stay another 3-5 nights, for each of the other 7 teams that will
have their schedules delayed?  It is also unfair on the teams that get
shorted on rest.

And, the TV rights are no joke.  It is harder than you think to reschedule
these things.

Not necessarily. I hate the golden goal too. I think there should be two 15
min. extra-time periods, then penalties if necessary. If a team scores
first, the other team still has a chance to fight back and score an
equalizer and even a winner. The other team can score again and put it away.
Golden goal is too harsh on the team that loses. I think they should have a
chance to fight back.
France-Germany '82 would have had a different outcome if the GG was in
effect.

I prefer playing 30 games in a row between just those two teams, just
to make sure you really get the best one, but much like replays, my
solution isn't compatible with the World Cup environment.

Uh.. didn't France win EC 2000 by a golden goal1? Or maybe the
European championships wasn't hosted by UEFA, or they recently
changed the tournament rules again?

1) yes, I know it unfortunately was vs Italy

It is changed for the start of the next season.

Unless you have a 7-match playoff to decide the winner, no other system of
deciding the winner can be considered fair.

We could sum up the market value of the players, and the team worth
most money goes through/wins. Viva Italia, France, Argentina et.al.
