Portugal - Greece

PORTUGAL (probable starting 11)

                          Ricardo

Paulo Ferreira     F. Couto  Jorge Andrade  Rui Jorge (Nuno Valente)

                    Costinha         Petit

Luis Figo                                            Simao (Ronaldo)

                          Rui Costa (Deco)

                           Pauleta

Quite a balanced side with 4 main attacking players, 2 holding
midfielders. I personally would have replaced Petit for Deco and gone
for 2 creative players against the defence-minded Greeks. And of
course would have ditched Couto for Ricardo Carvalho

GREECE (probable starting 11)

                     Ikopolidis

       Dellas                     Goumas (Kapsis)

                    Dabizas

Seitardis                            Venetidis

Lakis     Giannakopoulos   Tsiartas (Karagounis)  Zagorkis (Basinas)

                      Nikolaidis

So far only Atletico Madrid striker Nikolaidis is considered doubtful
with a leg injury, but this should be their 1st choice line-up. Under
German coach Otto Rehhagel, Greece have become a good defensive
counter-attacking team. Shouldn't be under-estimated.

This is nuts. One of the best defenders currently in the world,
Ricardo Carvalho, doesn't start but Fernando "Brian McBride's ***"
Couto does, just because he's the captain.

Please!

Scolari has made it clear that he favors R.Costa instead of Deco.

The good thing about it, besides the fact that R.Costa is rested, is
that he knows that if he doesn't play his best he loses his spot to
Deco.

N?o estranhes.

(He apologises for his Portuguese, but explains that he barely gets
across all that he wants in English. As an RSS-Voyeur more than a
regular, he hopes it won't bore us if he writes in Portuguese in some
posts)

N?o, nunca, Buzi-baby. Eu adoro falar Portugues, embora eu sei que eu
o escrevo muito ruim mesmo. Mais melhor que nada! :)

[I and half the world queried why Couto was still starting for
Portugal. Buzinas told me it's small wonder since Couto is an
ex-Benfica player, moreover a sacred cow in Portugal because of this,
and perhaps certain rumours which arose yesterday of Scolari going to
manage Benfica after EURO 04 -- which I forgot to post, btw! -- might
have a tiny bit to do with this...mind you, Scolari refuted these
rumours yesterday]

Very interesting indeed. Scolari apparently didn't see ONE SINGLE
MATCH of Porto in the Champions League but...

Quote:

...made great show of coming back from his holidays in Marocco to
watch Benfica v. Moreinse (LOL), the latter of which have less than 3
years in the top flight, at the Stadium of Light.

Buzinas is right. This has all the fingerprints of Scolari being
future coach of Benfica.

He mentions in passing that Rui Costa, to the surprise of no one in
Portugal, has pushed Deco, present-day European champ, to the bench
because he's also a Benfica player, and even more of a sacred cow in
Portugal than even Brian McBride's ***.

Ack. ;(

Marocco! See how the human mind works when having to halve it between
to languages? I find that fascinating. :)

In Spain, it's Marruecos, and I fancy I wouldn't have made that lapsus
linguae if I had read Marruecos, which isn't like Morocco, but Marocco
is too close to the English. :)

Correcting your translation here. Couto is a sacred cow for the
national team - he used to be an ex-Porto player not Benfica, but
rumours have it Benfica want to buy him, so he may be a future player.

Just an update, Petit may be dropped for Maniche for the opening match
against Greece, since he's more attack-minded then Petit.  I still
think Deco should be in instead.

Greece have got plenty of injury worries for this match. Striker
Nikolaidis has recovered and will play by the looks of things.  But
defensively, they have problems, Dellas and Dabizas are doubtful.
Hopefully good news for the Portuguese

Another update: Greece's Dabizas will definitly not even be on the
bench for tomorrows opening match.  A back injury will keep him
sidelined for the first game, although he may return for the other
group matches

Yay! Thanks for the update, Buzi. :)

Here's what they had as the starting Portugal lineup, according to
Scolari:

Assim, partida, Portugal dever alinhar com a seguinte equipa:

Ricardo;
Paulo Ferreira, Fernando Couto, Jorge Andrade e Rui Jorge;
Costinha e Maniche;
Lus Figo, Rui Costa e Sim?o;
Pauleta.

Carvalho))

I'd like to ask the Portuguese RSS'ers what is the linguistic origin
of:

uma equipa
o golo

In Brazilian-Portuguese, which I am more knowledgeable about, they are
quite different.

uma equipe
p gol

Note, what I am not asking is which is more correct, etc. As a Brit in
America, I know all too well the sensitive nature of even thinking
that question. :)
