=== 1. SWEDEN v BRAZIL TEAM NEWS ===

Swedish striker Martin Dahlin looks set to face Brazil after undergoing
intense treatment for severe cramp. Dahlin, whose partnership with Kennet
Andersson has produced eight goals, looks set to be joined by injured trio
Jonas Thern, Joachim Bjorklund and Roger Ljung.

Arsenal's Stefan Schwarz, sent off against Romania, is suspended. Brazil
will be without Leonardo, serving a four-match ban, but are otherwise at
full-strength.

Brazil and Sweden boast the biggest World Cup rivalry of any of the 61
countries who have battled against each other in the competition. When the
two sides meet in the second semi-final in Los Angeles later today, it
will be the seventh time they have been paired together The Swedes are
still seeking their first win, having lost four and drawn two of the
previous matches. They have already met once in this World Cup, drawing
1-1 in the final first round Group B game.

=== 2. ITALY LAUNCHES TASSOTTI BAN APPEAL ===

Italy are to appeal against the eight match ban imposed by FIFA on
right-back Mauro Tassotti. Tassotti was handed the suspension, together
with a #10,000 fine, after smashing his elbow into Spaniard Luis Enrique's
face. The incident left Enrique with a broken nose, but the Italians claim
the punishment is too severe. Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi said: "Tassotti
knows he did wrong but we did not expect such a heavy ban. We are very
sorry for him.

Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi has made three changes for Wednesday night's
semi-final in New Jersey. Roberto Mussi, Nicola Berti and Pierluigi
Casiraghi come in for Mauro Tassotti, Antonio Conte and Daniele Massaro.
Sacchi would not confirm if Mussi would have played had Tassotti not been
banned by FIFA. Lazio's Giuseppe Signori has again been omitted but Sacchi
said both he and Massaro could play a part.

Italian manager Arrigo Sacchi has warned his team of the danger of
Bulgaria's forward line. "Offence is their strength and we will have to
watch out for Stoichkov and Kostadinov, who are amongst the world's best
forwards.

"It's going to be another battle," he added. "We will have to control them
closely."

Midfielder Dino Baggio said: "We earlier hoped to play Bulgaria in the
semi-final but now I've changed my mind. They are very dangerous."

=== 3. TOMMY BURNS BECOMES CELTIC MANAGER ===

Tommy Burns has been appointed as the new manager of Celtic in succession
to Lou Macari. Burns resigned as manager of Kilmarnock on Monday afternoon
after speculation linking him with the Parkhead job. The 37-year-old was a
Celtic player for 15 years before joining Killie in 1989 and taking charge
at Rugby Park in April 1992. Celtic managing director Fergus McCann does
not expect to have to pay Kilmarnock any compensation.

Tommy Burns could not quite believe he had been appointed Celtic boss
after signing a three-year contract "I don't think it has hit me yet," he
said. "I welcome the chance to do my own thing and I'll be looking to put
in what's been missing.

"I aim to bring success to Celtic. It will take time, but with the support
and patience of the fans we will get there."

Managing director Fergus McCann said: "He has a great knowledge of Celtic
and understands the challenges facing the club."

=== 4. STARK QUITS KILLIE POST TO JOIN BURNS ===

Billy Stark has quit as assistant manager of Kilmarnock and followed Tommy
Burns to Celtic. Stark played alongside Burns at both clubs before
becoming his assistant and made the move instead of becoming Killie's new
manager.

=== 5. LEEDS SIGN SKUHRAVY IN RECORD DEAL ===

Leeds have clinched the signing of Czech striker Tomas Skuhravy from Genoa
in a club record #3m deal. The 28-year-old agreed a four-year contract
after lengthy negotiations and will formally sign after a medical at the
end of the week. Leeds managing director Bill Fotherby was delighted with
the capture, which bettered the #2.3m shelled out for Brian Deane. But he
insisted that Deane's future was not in doubt. "We need a strong squad and
we want Brian to remain a Leeds player." he said.

=== 6. McLEISH NAMED MOTHERWELL BOSS ===

Alex McLeish has been named as the new manager of Motherwell. The former
Scottish international has signed a three-year contract as player-manager
at Fir Park. "The chance to come into management came right out of the
blue," said the 35 year-old. McLeish's assistant at the club will be his
former Aberdeen teammate Andy Watson, who had been working as a coach for
Hibernian.

=== 7. CHRIS SUTTON TRANSFER NEWS ===

The Chris Sutton transfer-saga finally appears to be reaching its
conclusion after a press conference at Norwich's Carrow Road ground. Two
clubs, believed to be Arsenal and Blackburn, have agreed to meet City's
#5million fee by Friday and Sutton is to have talks with both. If he
agrees personal terms he seems set to make the move for a new British
record fee. Sutton said: "I don't know what will happen but after five
good years at Norwich it will be hard to leave the club."

=== 8. BRYAN ROY COMPLETES MOVE TO FOREST ===

Dutch international Bryan Roy has completed his #2.5million move to
Nottingham Forest from Foggia. The 24-year-old winger broke off from his
post-World Cup holiday to fly to Nottingham and sign a four- year
contract. Roy, who scored for Holland against Morocco in the States,
confessed: "I can't wait to get started. I am looking forward to the
challenge."

Forest boss Frank Clark said: "He is a world class player and I am sure he
will be a great success."

=== 9. WOLVES SIGN EMBLEN ===

Wolves have paid Millwall #600,000 for central defender Neil Emblen to
take Graham Taylor's summer spending spree to #2.85million. Emblen only
joined The Lions nine months ago from non-League side Sittingbourne for
#210,000.

=== 10. McQUEEN TO 'BORO ===

Gordon McQueen, the former Scottish international, has linked up with
former Manchester Utd teammate Bryan Robson as reserve team coach at
Middlesbrough.

=== 11. BIRMINGHAM FOR MARK WARD? ===

Birmingham manager Barry Fry is confident of completing the signing of
Everton's Mark Ward after a loan spell at St Andrews last season. Fry has
also offered Louie Donowa a new two-year contract and revealed that
Southampton and Swindon have enquired about 'keeper Kevin Miller

=== 12. BIG RON SIGNS LAMPTEY ===

Aston Villa hope to complete the signing of Anderlecht striker Nii Lamptey
within the next fortnight. The Ghanaian international has had talks with
Villa boss Ron Atkinson over a #1.25m deal and will have further
negotiations on July 25. Meanwhile Villa full-back Dariusz Kubicki is set
to join Sunderland for #100,000.

=== 13. DIVISION ONE POSTPONEMENTS FOR WEST BROM ===

West Brom have been allowed to postpone their first three home games next
season due to a delay in construction of a new all-seater #2million stand
at Smethwick Road. The game with Sheffield Utd has been moved to October
18 while the league games with Swindon will be reversed and the Coca-Cola
tie with Hereford takes place on September 7

=== 14. MICKY ADAMS SIGNED AS FULHAM PLAYER-COACH ===

Fulham have signed midfielder Micky Adams as player-coach, beating off
three other clubs, including two from the First Division. The former
Coventry and Southampton star links up with old boss Ian Branfoot.

=== 15. COVENTRY RECEIVE 800,000 POUNDS FOR ATHERTON ===

Sheffield Wednesday must pay Coventry #800,000 for Peter Atherton, a
tribunal has ruled. Coventry had valued the former England under-21
international defender at #1.5 million.

=== 16. LIBURD TO BRADFORD, HOYLE TO COUNTY ===

Middlesbrough full-back Richard Liburd is rejoining his former boss Lennie
Lawrence at Bradford City in a #200,000 deal. Meanwhile Bradford defender
Colin Hoyle has joined Notts County on a free transfer.

=== 17. SWINDON v PORT VALE GAME MOVED - Notts Co, Wolves & WBA too ===

Swindon's opening game in the Endsleigh First Division against Port Vale
has been moved to Sunday August 14 for live TV coverage.

Notts County now entertain Wolves on August 21 and Wolves take on West
Brom on August 28 for the same reason.

=== 18. BLACKPOOL SIGNS PHIL BROWN ===

Blackpool have signed Bolton right-back Phil Brown on a one-year contract.
He links up with David Burke who joined The Seasiders last month.

=== 19. STOKE SIGNS DREYER ===

Stoke have made their first close-season signing by snapping up Luton
defender John Dreyer on a free.
