Milan goalkeeper --> Sebastiano Rossi

Post by Hari Seld » Sun, 18 Apr 1993 06:01:20

Does anyone know anything about Milan's goalkeeper Sebastiano Rossi?
All I know is that he previously played for Cesena.  I also think he was
the goalkeeper in the disastrous Champions' Cup tie against Marseille (Yes the
one which resulted in the ban).

I would also appreciate any information about Milan's old keeper (I
think his name was Pazzaglia;I think).  Where is Tacconi?  Is Pagliuca still
the Italian keeper or has Zenga (quite rightfully) return as the #1 Italian
keeper?

My dream Champions' Cup final would be Milan vs Marseille.  It will be
sweet revenge (to say the least) for the ban.  Plus we (ie.,Milan) get to rub
salt in Marseille's sore Champions' Cup wound.

        Ha!Ha!Ha!

The 1st leg of this 1/4-final in Milan was actually a tie : 1 - 1 (Gullit-Papin)
But it was the MILAN'S DEFEAT (I love these words) in Marseille (1-0,Waddle) and
Sacchi's refusing to play the end of the game which resulted to the ban.

Me too, but not for the same reasons.

I can answer some of your goalkeeper questions.  Rossi began the season
as Milan's backup, but the first keeper was injured.  I recall his name
being Antognoli or something, perhaps someone can clear that up.

Regarding the national team, neither Zenga or Tacconi appear to be in
Sacchi's plans.  Zenga continues as Inter's keeper.  Juventus' keeper is
Peruzzi, who has looked quite good whenever I have seen Juve play.  Tacconi
was transferred to Genoa, but my impression is that he is not a regular
there either.  The Italian keepers are Pagliuca (Sampdoria) and Marchegiani
(Torino).  Marchegiani (sorry for the bad spelling) was the starter in
Italy's first WC qualifying game against Switzerland, but he stunk and
was responsible in part for both of the goals in a 2-2 home draw that
they were lucky to get (both the Italian goals came in the last 10 minutes
of the second half, trailing 2-0 after 80 minutes).  He is now Pagliuca's
backup.  I follow Serie A very closely, not having missed a Sunday game
or Franco Zucalla or 90 minuto very often for the last few years.  In my
opinion Pagliuca is without doubt the best goalkeeper in Italy.

I want to add two items to Ken's very accurate report. Now the second-string
Milan goalie is Cudicini (20 years old?), the son of a famous Milan
goalkeeper of the past.
Marchegiani had also a great share of the guilt inn the two goals that
Holland scored against Italy in an exhibition game, played just before
Italy-Switzerland.  As you know, Italy came back from behind against
Holland scoring three unanswered goals. They could have scored even
more.
Marchegiani (include also people like Baresi, too old, Viercovod, again too
old, and Costacurta, clearly a modest player) should be dropped from
the national team.  He is great with Torino but when he dresses in
"azzurro" he seems to choke. There are a number of good alternatives,
Peruzzi probably being the best.

I would like to thank everbody who took the time to answer my
questions about the Serie A goalkeeper.  But now I have another question:
Who the hell is Peruzzi.  Was he a reserve when Tacconi played for Juventus?
Why was Tacconi transferred to Genoa?  Was he made one of the annual Juventus
scapegoats?

But Marseille apologized by giving Papin to Milan, didn't they ?

Actually there are four questions (:-).

Quote:
>Who the hell is Peruzzi.

A goalkeeper (:-).

He is pretty young (he's 23 now) and came from AS Roma in 1991 with a
lot of cash (about 10 billion liras) in exchange for Thomas Haessler.
He was disqualified for one year in 1990 for having taken ***.

Quote:
>Was he a reserve when Tacconi played for Juventus?

Yes, he was. He also was the starter in the Italian Cup games. At
the end of the season 1991-92 he also became the starter in league
games.

Quote:
>Why was Tacconi transferred to Genoa?

He wasn't transferred. Juventus decided not to renew his contract.
They felt that the great Stefano was getting old and it was best
for their interests to make Peruzzi the starter.

It was Tacconi who decided to go to Genoa. Unfortunately nothing
good came up for my second favorite team.

Quote:
>Was he made one of the annual Juventus scapegoats?

Absolutely not. Juventus didn't need scapegoats last year. They
fight very hard a much superior Milan team and, only at the end,
they gave up. They came up in second place with 48 points, five
points clear of third place Torino. In my opinion, a *great* result.

Who is going to be the Juve's keeper against PSG ?

Peruzzi was previously on Roma, but he had been banned for a year for the
same reason as Carnevale (using forbidden diet pills).  He didn't become a
regular starter until last year (previously he& Riccardo Cervone split the
spot).  IMHO from the Roma games I've seen (and 1-2 Juve ones) he is above
average but not national team quality.
Pagliuca is fine, but I have much sympathy for Zenga and believe Marchegianni
should be given another chance, preferably in a friendly game.  After all,
he's the least-scored-on goalie in serie A for the last 2 years.

P.S. : Whoever said Costacurta didn't deserve to be on the nazionale, could he
please send Costacurta to Fiorentina? We NEED DEFENDERS, ADESSO!
