Club Brugge - Panathinaikos 1-0
5' 1-0 Staelens [pen]
Panathinaikos had a terrible start in Brugge when Markos handled a cross
from Verengen and a penalty was awarded to the home team. Lorenzo Staelens
scored from the spot.
Shocked by the goal, Panathinaikos continued to play below par in the remainder
of the first half. Brugge however did not capitalize from the nervousness
shown by the Greek team in this period.
In the second half, Donis came on as a substitute and lifted Panathinaikos
who became more adventurous and started going forward. Warzycha and Borelli
had two good efforts that narrowly missed. Donis himself also missed a good
chance. Donis was injured towards the end and had to come off.
In summary, Panathinaikos played poorly in the first half, but must be
satisfied and encouraged with the way they played in the second half.
The return game at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Nov 3rd should be
interesting.
