From Sam's excellent na-soccer all-star survey:

Quote:
>Defenders:
>        Alexi Lalas, New England Revolution; USA
>        Jeff Agoos, Washington D.C. United; USA
>        Steve Pittman, Tampa Bay Mutiny; USA
>        1st Reserve: Martin Vasquez, Tampa Bay Mutiny; USA
>        2nd Reserve: Eddie Pope, Washington D.C. United; USA

Thanks, Sam, for doing the poll.

I wonder if it is because Lalas is so well known, or because defense is a
weakness in MLS, but Lalas' inclusion here will no doubt make many Rev
supporters smirk.  He has not, in the minds of many (most? all?) Revs
supporters, he has not distinguished himself as a top MLS defender.

In the ongoing Midnight Riders Man of the Year competition, Lalas is yet to
finish in the top 3 Revs for ANY SINGLE MATCH (we only vote on home
matches, but I don't think that is making the difference here).  Year to
date, he is not even in the top 8 or 10 Revs in that survey.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say that such Rev fan favorites as Welton
or Beto belong in the all-star lineup, and keeper Aidan Heaney was
obviously close to reserve Dougherty, I do know one thing for sure:

Lalas would rather give his all for the na-soccer all-star team than the
Revs, but then who's surprised at that?

Later,

Eric

Further, the poll is listed in order of votes received, and Lalas was far
and away the first-place winner.  I wouldn't have voted for him, but the
pollster must bend to the will of the people.

Ditto.

I'm also surprised that Wynalda was named as a forward.  I think he's been
coasting most of the season.  (This from a fan of his!)

Cheers,

Worth noting here is that Soccer America, whose player ratings are
generally on track as far as I can tell, listed Lalas in second place in
average rating among defenders in the last issue I saw.
I'll agree, though, that his play now isn't up to the standard it was 1994
and 1995, which could probably be blamed on burnout -- he's simply played
too many games in the last 18 months or so.
I'd put him on the All-Star team this year and look for him to be better
next season after a well-deserved break.
