Final Score: NY/NJ 3, Dallas 2
NY/NJ METROSTARS 3, DALLAS BURN 2 East Rutherford, NJ -
Giovanni Savarese scored twice, including the game-winner in the
77th minute, to lead the MetroStars to a 3-2 Major League Soccer
victory over the Dallas Burn before 17,416 at Giants Stadium
Wednesday night.
Savarese, missing from the MetroStars lineup of late due to
Venezuelan national team commitments, slid onto a Tab Ramos cross
to send the decisive tally past goalie Mark Dodd. He scored the
MetroStars second goal of the game on a similar play in the 48th
minute, assisted by Roberto Donadoni.
The MetroStars had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to
Nicola Caricola's 35th-minute header, off a Donadoni free kick
from 35 yards out.
Leonel Alvarez put the Burn on the board with a 63rd minute
penalty kick after Peter Vermes was called for a handball in the
box. Three minutes later, Hugo Sanchez rocketed a 25-yard left-
footer past 'keeper Tony Meola to tie the score.
The MetroStars, who struggled to a 4-8 record at the
beginning of the season, have won four of their last five games,
and are third in the Eastern Conference at 8-9. The Burn's record
drops to 10-9.
