Disappointing Sweden

I'm really, really disappointed by this game...

I said to myself before the game: keep the Germans down the first
15 minutes, don't let them get a good start, then start attacking.
Yeah, right... We're not worthy to be in the 1/8 finals with this
kind of defense, especially Olof Mellberg. What is he doing???

I didn't agree to let Zlatan start, but thought OK, let's give
him a chance. But it was clear very early that he's still out of
form. WHY do Lagerb?ck insist on playing someone that *might*
be great, in form?

The red card is a joke, of course, that's one explanation why
Sweden cannot get back. But we did create chances one man down.

But Henrik Larsson, oh dear... That would have been our chance
to get back. But he's also out of form.

Looking back to WC 1994, we don't need a terrific start. But we
do need to grow, to have players that raise to the occasion,
to have players in form. This is clearly missing in 2006.

I'm not very proud of my team right now...

Commiserations from an England fan, Thomas. Best of luck, in the

The difference compared to the really great football nations is
that Sweden cannot put together 1.5 or 2 complete high-quality
squads. We might be able to start slow and scrape through to the
final rounds, but we won't get much further unless we've shown
growing form (including individual top players) and manage to
stay clear of injuries. The latter hasn't been a big problem
this time, but form doesn't suddenly come striking down from
above.

All Swedes love to look back to WC 1994, but the difference
compared to today is very clearly showing in our matches this time.

If I were a Swede, I would be also.

Not defending, that's for sure.

What were some other viable options?

Well, if the player wasn't such a***head following his first yellow
and the amount of ***ing he did at the ref led to his sending off. It
wasn't about the tackle alone, it was the Swedish player's attitude
following the first card and his mouthing off to the ref. Apparently
this referee wasn't about no bullshit.

Yeah. Henke is still one of my favorite Swedish players of all time. I
miss the blonde dreads, it he had the dreads he would have scored 4
goals in this match. My other favorite Swedish players are Dahlin
(spelling?), Brolin, and Ravelli (spelling again? the keeper).I am a
big fan of Zlatan, and hope he can progress to the point where he is
truly world class.

Well, your guys didn't play to the level of what you all are capable of
during the entire tournmant, TBH, yet you still made it to the second
round. Sweden may be down for a minute, but not out.

Shame, I had Sweden winning the group...

Or the one in min 29, where he stood right next to Edman who tried to
break Podolski's foot by deliberately jumping on his heel from behind.
Free kick but no card, wtf?

Allb?ck and even Elmander. Not necessarily from the start, but
at least after 30 or 45 minutes. Zlatan had, I think, one good
move in the entire game (the shot that was saved at the post).

If you watch it again, the ref. has absolutely no intention to give
another yellow card right after the whistle. You would expect him to
immediately run towards the player and give the card. Instead, one
or two Germans approached the ref. who suddenly decides to give the
card. That looked very odd to me.
