"The Philadelphia Union reached a contract termination by mutual consent with midfielder Freddy Adu, who signed with Esporte Clube Bahia, a Brazilian club. In turn, the Union acquired the veteran Brazilian midfielder Jose Kleberson on loan from the same team. Adu, 23, went to Philadelphia in August 2011 and made 35 appearances for the Union, scoring seven times with two assists. Kleberson, 33, was on Brazils winning team in the 2002 World Cup."

Maybe one of the Brazilian posters can tell us a thing or two about this club.

EC Bahia are a traditional club, a regional powerhouse, League champions in
1988 and Cup champions in 1959. Historically speaking, you could say that
they belong to a class of clubs immediately below the Big 12 (which would
also include Sport, Coritiba, Atl tico-PR and the likes).

In recent times, they have been through more lows than highs, including a
couple of years in S rie C (around 2006 or so). They have been back to S rie
A for the last two seasons now, fighting mostly to avoid the drop. I expect
the same for them this year.

I think you've already said the essentials. I'll post some more tidbits via
your post.

Indeed. Their cup win made of them the first team to win a national
competition in Brasil, and they did that in style, beating none other than
Pel 's Santos in the final.

Yes. Also, they are a very popular club (most popular in the nordeste, among
teams from the region? Maybe Santa Cruz runs them close, or vice-versa...).
In the old days I seem to remember Bahia always hovering near the top of the
average attendance table. Nowadays they don't have the Fonte Nova anymore,
abandoned by Bahia State and imploded for World Cup reasons, but the feeling
is that it still doesn't take a lot for them to fill their current ground.
However, as you say, they are a regional powerhouse (not a national one).

August 12, 2003: Kleberson signs for Man U
August 14, 2003: Freddy scores a hat trick in the opening game of the U17 WC

Both players reached the individual high points of their careers within two days of each other ten years ago?

I thought Brazilian teams wanted big central midfielders these days? Adu is skillful but small and unathletic.

From what I've been able to understand from reports, this wasn't a planned
move by Bahia. Apparently Philadelphia wanted Kleberson on loan and offered
Adu in return.

In theory, this trade works for Bahia in some aspects. First, it is a salary
dump. Second, it's an opportunity for a regional football brand to get some
international exposure and recognition.

In football terms, Bahia have been needing to replace AM Gabriel, a home
grown player and fan favorite, who they lost early this season. They have
been addressed that in part by signing Argentine Paulo Rosales from
Independiente, I assume, but it won't hurt to have options or more players
to share the burden.

All things considered, this move figures to be a low risk bet for Bahia.
Good luck for Adu.

I'll say the high point of Kleberson's career came 11 years ago.

I was trying to exclude that with "individual high point".

Anyway, Freddy's registration went through just in time, so he'll be eligible to play for Bahia in the state championshop.

I think this is much Adu about nothing.

Ah ha ha ha, uhhm, yes that may be my most desperate attempt at humour
(I was kind of hoping someone else would try for the cheap laughs).
But in the end, I just could not resist.

I like young Freddy, honest!  Even if it may turn out that he is
really 38 years old.
