SMITH QUITS SARACENS

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saracens have confirmed that chief executive Mike Smith has quit
the club "in order to pursue other business interests."

Club owner Nigel Wray said: "In many ways Mike was the
instrumental force in changing Saracens from amateur to
professional status."

Saracens, who won the Tetley's Bitter Cup last campaign, are the
only Premiership club with a 100% record.

As a member of the English First Division Rugby executive
committee, Smith argued fiercely for clubs to have increased
influence over the domestic game.

Apparently Smithie had his nose bent for talking to the press without
board clearance. One of those that agreed with Sir John Hall. He then
went on a two week sabbatical, the club stating that they did not know
whether he would return. Did he jump, or was he pushed? Additionally, I
believe that Heather Simpson in marketing got the bullet (we never did
get our night out on the p*ss with Copsey). And finally there's a
extraordinary general meeting of the totally independent Saracens
Supporters Association tonight. No details but the hints are that the
club want to take it over. The SSA are there to support the team and it
also runs coaches to the away matches. I think there after the latter
which seems odd as Peter Deakin has stated that he don't care an iota
about the other clubs 'bums on seats' problems and here he is helping
them. We do need greater away support, bit like the old days still.
Anyway if there are more away supporters we can get the old 'where were
you when we were shit' song going.

You weren't shit Boonie, but some weeks at Southgate you were probably playing
in it.
It must be a bit of blow to the dog owners of the
area knowing that Englands finest will not be sliding through Fidos' calling
cards every week.
They just have the Sunday league football pitches to foul now, can't be as much
fun.

We still call Ian Sloane (Sarries kit manager - the man with the
bottles) 'Ian the Shovel'.

Presumably the facilities at Vicarage Rd are designed to encourage
away support for Sarries;-)
