WORLD CUP - PAY FOR VIEW IN US - only option?

WORLD CUP - PAY FOR VIEW IN US - only option?

Post by DDCLYO » Mon, 13 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I noted on the Fox World website that the semi's and the finals of the WC will
be on pay per view.  I don't know if this is the only option other than either
satellite dish or going to a bar but it really is mystifying to me that for all
intense purposes the WC will be inaccessible to all but those that really want
to see the matches.

How the hell is rugby going to be "spread to the masses" with such incredibly
limited coverage.  There is no way that an audience can be built for the sport
in this country unless people can tune into the games.  It looks like yet
another World Cup is going to come and go without anybody but the devoted
figuring out how and where to see the games.  For all intense purposes the WC
does not exist in this country and the alleged benefits of seeing the sport
presented on the world stage will be lost yet again.

Anybody else have thoughts or observations on this?  Maybe someone can prove me
wrong and tell me that yes indeed the games will be available.  Help, anyone?

By the way, how much does it cost to rent a satellite dish for a month?

I don't know.  What I do know is that Rupert Murdoch has given US$160
million for a new [RC] Cathedral to be built in Los Angeles. The first
thing I thought was of that brother in the Ivory Coast who built his
very own St.Peter's in his home town.

I hope you are wrong!!!  but I agree with you that it will not spread into the US
if you make a select few people pay for it, so that the masses can't see what a
great game Rugby is. If you find an Email address and post it we can try and
bombard Fox with emails to get some Email Vigilante group going so that they s***
those plans... but watching ina bar is always fun, its only for 3 games anyway. 2
semis and a FINAL with Australia in it!!!!!!

WORLD CUP - PAY FOR VIEW IN US - only option?

Latest word I have is that you can get all the matches via Fox Sports World on
satellite dish via a premium subscription on direct TV (Gold or Platinum
level).  If you have not got a dish it is pricy to get hooked up and the
monthly cost for the service is $29 for gold and $39 for platinum.  And you
don't even get your local channels!  A real bargain.

PPV is limited to cable companies that carry Fox PPV; mine does not.

The US matches apparantly will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net but on a delayed
(taped) basis; not great coverage.  Semi's and Final will be on a week or so
after the games are played.  Given the coverage of the sport in the US it would
be easy to avoid finding out the scores and watch the matches as real-time
events, I guess!!!

And yes the bars are an option and a good one for atmosphere but a bunch of
cronies at home is fun too.

Bottom line is viewing options suck.  So much for the value of the WC for
spreading the game
