  North Harbour: Glenn Davis try
Frano Botica 1 con, 2 pens; Walter Little drop goal

Saturday, 5 September 1998

Waikato 95 thrashed Southland 7 at Rugby Park
Waikato:  Deon Muir 3, Dean Anglesey 2, Glen Jackson 2,
Keith Lowen 2, Michael Collins, Aaron Hopa,
Damien Karauna, Scott McLeod, Richard Coventry tries,
            Penalty try
            Matthew Cooper 10 cons
  Southland:  Pita Alatini try
              Simon Culhane 1 con

To put it simply, Waikato scored a lot of tries and Southland didn't.
A Waikato forward pack lead by Deon Muir smashed through Southland.
Muir scored 3 tries for the second week running making him the highest
try scorer in the NPC with 7 tries.

It was good to see Scott McLeod return from injury for about 20
minutes at the end.  Glen Jackson put in an excellent performance and
may keep Ian Foster on the bench.

Canterbury 50 defeated Auckland 17 at Eden Park
Canterbury:  James Kerr, Angus Gardiner, Justin Marshall 2,
               Mark Meyerhofler, Mal Arnold tries
               Andrew Mehrtens 4 cons, 2 pens, 1 drop goal;
               Daryll Lilley 1 drop goal
Auckland:  George Harder, Craig Dowd tries
Adrian Cashmore 2 cons, 1 pen

Mehrtons excelled in the extra space that Auckland gave him.  He
guided Canterbury to their biggest victory over Auckland in NPC
history.

Otago 47 defeated Counties Manukau 25 at Carisbrook
Otago:  Romi Ropati 2, John Leslie, Matthew Carrington,
          Reuben Parkinson tries
Tony Brown 5 cons, 4 pens
Counties:  Hare Makari, Jona Qio tries, Blair Feeney try
Blair Feeney 2 cons, 2 pens

Sunday, 5 September 1998
------------------------

Wellington 29 defeated Taranaki 18 at Athletic Park
Wellington: Tana Umaga, Colin Sullivan tries
Jon Preston 2 cons, 5 pens
Taranaki:  Vaimosa Fa'aofo, Dean Magon tries
Jason Holland 1 con, 2 pens

 Team             P  W  L  D  F   A   4+  <7 Pts
 Waikato          4  4  0  0 178  50   2   0  18
 Canterbury       4  3  1  0 165  98   3   0  15
 Otago            4  3  1  0 127 105   3   0  15
 Taranaki         4  2  2  0  94  81   0   1   9
 Wellington       4  2  2  0  97  90   0   1   9
 Nth Harbour      4  2  2  0  63  81   1   0   9
 Southland        4  2  2  0  45 167   0   0   8
 Auckland         4  1  3  0  95 127   0   2   6
 Counties Manukau 4  1  3  0  60  75   1   1   6
 Northland        4  0  4  0  60  91   0   3   3

Unless there is a massive form reversal the semi-finalists will be
Waikato, Canterbury, Otago and one other team (not Northland).
Taranaki, Wellington, North Harbour, Southland, Auckland and
Counties-Manukau could all be the other team.  Of those teams North
Harbour has the hardest remaining matches.

Where is the try scored by Ryan Wheeler,  the one they showed on the news?

McLeod puts Lowen in the clear on the left wing,  he gets pulled down on
the 10 metre line by the Southland fullback,  and passes inside to Wheeler
who falls over the tryline to score.

I bet you got this from the Herald,  who got it wrong too.

I think the try I had down for McLeod was Wheeler's try.  Well they
are both tall guys in head gear.  I'll have to have another look at
the match.

I posted that message on Sunday night so unless I'm psychic, then I
couldn't have got it from the Herald.

OK.  McLeod always wears black head gear,  the others wear the
red/yellow/black head gear like Hopa's.
