One of the things about the RWC is that it generally throws up a bolter or two.
In 87 the ABs hadn't been *** at all in the years leading up, and France
upset Australia to get to the Final; in 91 England upset France in the quarters
and Australia kicked NZ (although we should have seen that coming); and in 95
the Boks upset Australia in pool play, while the ABs were only about fourth or
fifth favourites.

You'd have to be a pretty rabid NZ supporter to start giving the 1999 trophy to
1997's most successful team.

Good argument.

The problem is, though, that NZ, SA, France and probably England can
argue the same with equal ligitimacy.

And there is the thing of the sort of fields that the teams will play
on. And the weather. Those things can sometimes inroduce an unknown
factor.

Mature opinions from a Blacks supporter? What is the world coming too? ;-)

I must admit however that the strength in depth of the 97 ABs is somewhat
worrying for everyone else's WC99 hopes. But I really hope the rest of the
world catches up by 99 or it is going to be a pretty boring World Cup for
everyone bar Blacks supporters.

Well this is my point. On current assessment I don't think England do have
the talent to threaten in 99. Clive Woodward could be the best coach in
the world but if he doesn't have the talent to work with than what can he
do?

France - well they certainly have the backs but I don't know much about
their forwards.

SA will always be a threat if they play well.

Australia have a problem at outside half - but if we solve that one, I
think we have enough talent everywhere else - provided we don't have
any injuries.

The Blacks can field at least 2 teams that could beat any
other team in the world at the moment. But come the WC99 final, they can
only put 15 guys on the field at once. And if Australia are there with a
fully fit in-form team of 1st choice players, then I reckon we got enough
talent to give the Blacks a run for their money.
