Tony Russ, director of rugby, will be moving on from Welford Road. He
has been in post for the last five years and been highly effective in
raising Leicester's game, introducing an effective feeder system for
the first team.
Asked by the Leicester Mercury if he had been sacked, President/chief
executive Peter Wheeler said "we disagreed on the way forward and the
role he is fulfilling at the moment wont be in place next year". It
may be significant that Russ has been associated with the 10 man game
plan Leicester are trying to move forward from.
Russ was offered the less influential "director of coaching" position
now vacant, but wasn't interested.
Possible coaches include Les Cusworth, England's assistant coach, and
Bob Dwyer, both of whom Wheeler has spoken with.
Graham Shiel, the Scottish centre, seems less likely to be coming to
Welford Road next season. Reports that he lokked upon the move to
Leicester as a last resort (or words to that effect) haven't gone down
well with the club.
Austin Healey, Orrell and England A scrum half/wing has signed papers
to join Leicester next season.
A couple of weeks ago Wheeler was on record as saying Leicester were
talking with 6 or so England A players and expected to sign about 3.
There was a bizarre report on "Rugby Special" that Will Carling has
turned down the offer of a 500,000 pounds move to the Tigers. I know
we need a centre or two, but really...........
All the best
