Justin (this is f**king bullshit) Marshall blows his stack too easily.
You can't have an AB captain who has to apologise on the national
evening news for his child-like paddies on the field. He was given the
chance & blew it - History!

>Randell - most likely (but if the AB's start losing, confidence in him

A very fine and developing player, but he hasn't even filled Zinny's
boots yet, let alone Fitzy's as well. I admire Randell, but I feel that
for him to captain this season might be premature. Might be a year too
early for Randell. Having said that, I'm sure that if he is given the
chance this year, he will seize it, and make good. Good luck to him if
he gets it.
Quote:
>Dowd - Oh shit
Dowd is the most likely choice for this year, for my money anyway.
A very fine player who is street wise. Would be a good choice for this
year.

Too much of a gentleman. His example inspires others to follow, but when
the chips are down in the tri-series, I don't think he is the man. You
would need a Sunday captain as well. I can't see Iceman lasting till
Wales 99.

>Blackadder - Not likely to make the test team on any consistent basis.
Even Auckland's self-appointed technical advisory officer ole Trace
would open her other eye to express surprise at this one. In my memory,
the only player to Captain a test team so early in his test career was
Andy Leslie. Not a great success that wasn't! He was voted by the press
as NZ's most over-rated player. Hmm, Graeme Mourie got it in his second
year & did well. IMO Blackadder's appointment would be about as
successful as silly old Main's grooming of the great Mike Tampax Brewer,
(in for one week & out for three).
Quote:
>Allen - Same as above.
Lovely guy, one of nature's gentlemen, capable of inspirational crowd
pleasing stuff. A man to be admired, but he's also not in the test team.
see above.

Nope, can't see it, but I would he has done inpirational work in
leadership for Otago, and I admire this man. A true great.
Quote:
>M Jones. Will have influence in the backline anyway.
Can't follow the logic on this one.
Quote:
>Merhtens - I think he could be a very good option.
Merhts is a great player and in fine form, but it would be wrong. The
great Richard Hadlee would not captain, because it would take his mind
off his job. England's Bob Willis tried it and it was a disaster. The
first five is the wrong person, regardless of who it is. Phill Bennett
spent a whole Lions' tour out here proving the point.

>I. Jones - Nope - just doesn't have it (see Chiefs).
agreed

No, too unstable in temperament. Might punch the Ref!

Yes, could be a dark horse in the race. Peter Fats was a similar sort of
person, and did wonders with WS. Hmmmm, watch this space.
