Ranking the Anthems

Post by Gart » Wed, 15 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Anthems are a helluva important part of the game for my wife. Me, I
can't wait for them to end so's I can go blue in the face shouting at
the 30 demigods and 3 biased bastards on my telly.

Her rankings of national anthems:

1st) USA
2nd) Wales
3rd) England
4th) France
5th) Scotland
16,785,569th) South Africa

You put "God Save The Queen" ahead of "Flower of Scotland"?

Philistine!

She obviously hasn't heard the Italian anthem.  The only one that's
not funeral music.

Wow!  You wife rates our anthem that high? Her taste in music is clearly
shit. ;-)

The US has a bute alright. It's TOO LONG and reflects their ***
nature (the rockets red glair, the bombs burst in air) No wonder they
have so many shooting deathes a year, just look at their anthem.

Both my wife and I would agree with you Garth about anthems, or rather we
would have agreed with you until we attended our only international (to date
hopefully) earlier this year at the Stade de France between Scotland and
France (and we're both English but don't ask).

The French band's rendition of the "Fleur of Scotland" was so unbelievably
slow (perhaps in an effort to put the Scots off) it was laughable.  Better
was the crowd's reaction.  They may be parochial but, to give them their
due, the French actually booed the band off the field!

Unfortunately, there followed a sparkling game of rugby and everyone forgot
the band but I think your wife's on the right lines.

Yeah, SA's is a bit of a shocker. NZ's isn't much better.

} Yeah, SA's is a bit of a shocker. NZ's isn't much better.

I would tend to say the best in terms of stirring up a side would have
to be the Welsh anthem at the Arms Park (I refuse to bow to this
"Millennium Stadium" nonsense...) closely followed by the French ("Aux
armes, aux armes mes citoyens" or whatever the exact wording is - I
fail to see how you could fail to be fired up by it). I assume Ireland
will be using the pseudo-anthem "Ireland's Call" for the WC, which
I've never warmed to. Flower of Scotland is alright, but can be a tad
dirge like if not done right. God Save the Queen? Good anthem for some
occassions, but not for firing up a sports side and not actually
exclusively English. I'm tempted to support a shift to Jerusalem, but
I don't see the RFU ever moving to it.

Italian anthem sounds like one of those circus tent type theme songs.

others come close!!), I think that Sikele Africa (apologies for spelling) is a wonderful
anthem and should go in at no. 2. England, of course, lacking the wit to have their own
anthem, have to make do with what is supposed to be the British anthem (save her from
what?). Given that Jerusalem is unlikely to be rebuilt in England, I would suggest that
they look for a decent song now. Suggestions??

Fairs fair,

I'm an Englishman and a bit of monarchist, but even I wouldn't put God Save
the Queen above Flower of Scotland. I've never found myself stumbling down
Lavender Hill bellowing "God Save the Queen", Flower of Scotland on the
other hand.....

Bring on Jerusalem I say.

Problem is Simon, that Nkosi Sikelele iAfrica (Roughly translated as
"God bless Africa", and written by a ***y Scotsman!) is just one
part of a muti-faceted  Anthem. In these days of political correctness
here in SA, the powers that be have decreed that almost all our
national languages - and we have 14 of them - and two different songs
are represented in our anthem, making for a shambolic ***up
disparately sung by four different tribal groups, then english
speaking, then afrikaans speaking South Africans at different times
with varying levels of enthusiasm.

We South Africans yearn for a short, sharp, rousing, kick 'em in the
crotch, type anthem.

The rockets red glare actually refer to English rockets.
