great rugby moments

Sometimes its a brilliant try - sometimes its a bone shattering tackle and
somtimes a small povincial side defying the odds against a great touring
nation  - rugby can bring you moments that stay vivid in your memory for
ever.

Just prior to the big kick off I thought I'd share my favourite top five
memories of rugby in recent time

5th Place - seeing all the England players refusing interviews with Eddie
Butler and Jonathan Davies after Scott Gibbs denies England the 5 nations
championship in the dying seconds of the 1999 Wales England game

4th Place - Oz Durrant dumped by Scott Gibbs on the 97 Lions Tour (close one
this with the equally likeable Richard Lowe being bounced by Gavin Hastings)

3rd Place - Jonah Lomu picking Englishmen out of his studs as a winger
demolishes a much hyped England side in the world cup semis in SA

2nd place - Willie Anderson linking arms with his team mates and advancing
on Shelfords all black haka - Landsdowne Rd crowd roaring like their lives
depended on it

and in a clear and emphatic first place

Sitting in the new Millenium stadium prior to the Wales France match as
60,000 Welshmen boo 15 small English children dressed in their national team
colours clean off the park

Great stuff

My favorite rugby moment: Munster beating the All Blacks on Oct 31st 1978 at
Thomond Park Limerick., a day that anybody that was privileged to be present ,
will never forget.

Tackle for me, well probably illegal hit. Dale McIntosh of Pontypridd
flooring Andy Robinson of Bath in a European tie at Sardis Road about 3
years ago. It pissed down for the whole game and the Chief hit Mr Robinson
in the midriff; the whole crowd winced visibly and audibly to a man. No-one
there will ever forget it.

Canty V Otago shield defence 1995. The embankment may have given that game
away with 30m on the clock, but Merhens hadn't. Of course some thanks has to
be passed on to David Latta ..

Roger.

The problem is according the Scotland this wasn't the all blacks or even the 2nd
best team from New Zealand - it was just a bunch of blokes who were on tour with the
A.Bs who got together for a game against a local side on the day.

I was there on the terraces. I hadn't given up. I guess David Latta
feels pretty bad about that stuff up. Whilst Otago are my second team,
after Canterbury and I will support them against anybody apart from
Canterbury I love it when we beat them.

My best moment was seeing the looks on Auck's faces and Michael
Joneses' face in particular at the moment the Glorious Canterbury
Crusaders scored a try in the last two minutes of play in the 1998
Super 12 final. I saw pain.

... I just remember the comments from some of the Auck players, Jones
included, following that defeat. Cashmore's 'They didn't deserve to win' &
Jones's 'The knockers were right'.

There was a lack of Auck dignity in that loss.

Bit sad if you ask me. Booing 15 men in white shirts I can just about
understand, but kids ??!?!?! Come on.

Hell, vivid in my memory - in terms of this posting - is the huge
scores against UK teams in the last two years.

And then of course seeing Keith Wood leaving the field a beaten man
after losing the fight against the Boks. They lost the game as well.
